As the name suggests, this is a set of studios which are owned and run by a chap called Marios. It's a family affair, Marios' Mum is around daily, sweeping up the pool side and re-arranging the loungers etc. while the new addition - his puppy is very happy to form the welcome committee for anyone coming through the gate.
The rooms are basic but clean and fine for a base. Our room had a two-ring hob on the work top that could be used for knocking up your own dinner if you wanted to but to be honest there’s not really the space or the equipment to do it – plus with the resort lined with bars, restaurants and cafes and the fact that you’re on your holidays I can’t imagine why you would want to!
The room is cleaned and linen is changed every couple of days, I think the bathroom could really do with a daily wipe over but other than that there was no issue. Beds were comfortable enough, one skinny pillow per bed though which was a tad uncomfortable.
Pool side is generally well maintained, the pool itself is small but there are only 12 or so rooms so its not really an issue – watch out because the depth of the pool changes from being 1.5m to 2.60m rapidly. There is a small bar, we didn’t use it but I would think during high season it’s a well used facility.
We spent most days at the beach as it is literally a 5 minute walk away. The black sand does get extremely hot, so don’t forget your flip-flops! Loungers and parasols are €6 p/day, throughout the day you will see a number of Thai masseurs combing the beach for business – they don’t pester but it does get a bit tiresome when you have to keep saying “no” however I saw several sunbathers embark on a massage which seemed to be enjoyable and of a good standard.
Studios Marios is located at the southern end of Kamari beach, we took a walk down to the opposite end and were glad to find that we had a much better deal! The northern end looked much more “touristy” I would think that during peak season the hoards of tourists drinking and looking for entertainment would be quite intense. I had read reports that there are “packs” of dogs that roam the beach in the evening, this was certainly not the case, there are dogs but they are having too much fun chasing each other and laying in the sand to worry about the tourists.
All in all the seven nights we spent here were great, the beach was lovely, the locals were hospitable and the meals were very tasty. Studios Marios provided an extremely convenient base for our holiday and the fact that it is a small-scale operation means that we didn’t feel like part of the masses.
