Seeing as we did not get on too badly last year (see review April 2007) we booked a reasonable priced 'All Inclusive' break again back at Club Siroco.
WHAT WENT RIGHT:-
On arrival was met by an efficient receptionman who was booking in a number of people from our flight from Manchester.
The reception area floor had been spruced up & a little shop had opened up which made it quite pleasant.
The apartments are split into what is referred to as the 'Blue area ' or the 'Green Area', so called as to which colour their wood work is painted which corresponds to the colour of the metal on the patio doors.
Our apartment was an upgrade to a two bedroomed in the Green section overlooking the main pool which was a unexpected bonus.
The apartment was clean & a complimentary bread roll , slice of ham & cheese, apple & orange & yoghurt had been left for us which was a nice gesture (we didn't get that last year) It appears that one bedroomed apartments don't get it. So it seems we are on the 'up' as you might say.
TV was free but the only english speaking channel was CNN News, but we came on hols for the weather & a break really not to be glued to the depressing American election news.
The apartment was cleaned 5 days out of 7 , sheets & towels were changed regularly. Our beds were even made with precision corners.
The pool area was cleaned on a regular basis & leaves hoovered out of the pool every morning & sometimes several times during the day. It was thought to be heated compared to the other on in the 'Blue area' but still a little chilly for me!
The staff were friendly enough & curteous but like someone else has commented don't expect them to be your best friend. One waitress in the restaurant however did had good banter in spanish with my husband & she was lovely, God Bless her. (even though he didn't understand her it was plain enough to see that it was very good humoured)
The bar persons were quite conscientious when requested to stop serving a friend's son as he had drunk too much. (Here under 18's are not allowed to drink spirits but may drink beer) he duly obliged.
WHAT DIDN'T GO QUITE SO RIGHT:-
Unfortunately Easter was early this year , our apartment's balcony was the first one on a corner facing out the back of the complex. Even though the boys bedroom was overlooking the pool the back view was not offensive & we could see the sea but this meant that we only got the evening sun & at times it could be very windy. But hey not the management's fault just luck of the draw.
The bathroom smelled a bit on a couple of occasions, obviously the drains so we kept the plugs in the bath & the sink all the time & this cured the problem. The kitchen unit had one wonky door I suppose I should have reported it but I didn't.
The food was repetitive & OK we didn't starve but I craved a good meal. My major disappointment was that last year we did have some very nice prawns to have with a salad but they never made an appearance this year. Although cooked breakfasts were on offer & cereal, after a few cooked breakfasts I resorted to having crusty roll & jam in the morning or ham & cheese on roll.
One of our sons complained that the cornflakes were stale , funny I thought coming from him as the amount of junk food he eats doesn't make him a connoisseur . We got over this by smuggling in a box of 'Variety' & using their bowls. We had just happened to take them with us as a late night snack in our room for the boys.
We didn't eat at lunch but ate most evenings. I have to admit I didn't much like the food at dinner . Most times it was too cold or no variety for me although husband who likes weird food combinations didn't mind the food & found it hot enough for himself. I lived on rice & the boys chips with anything they could find that they might like.
The pool bar was advertised to be staying open until 10pm which it did apart from the last two nights where they closed it at 6pm. The last night they wouldn't even let us have the lights on which was a disappointment but we sat there anyway. This tended to coincide with the acts being on in the disco. Whether it was staffing problems or they wanted more of an audience for the acts we never actually found out.
The reason for us staying put was that none of us wanted to go in a disco room that was filled with smoke & lots of noise & loads of kids.We preferred to be able to compare notes on the days activities with our new found friends with a quiet drink.
Some reviewees have criticised smokers in the pool bar which does have two open sides (if you open the one with the sliding doors also) Hey,my husband is a smoker & I am a non-smoker. To be perfectly honest I never found it smoky & neither did other non-smokers but I did find that the disco exactly the opposite!
I suppose some people just want smokers to disappear off the face of the earth ort perhaps they had an excess of them.
NOTE as Lanzarote is not in the EU it does not have the same non-smoking laws.
What did grate on my nerves were the selfish people ( ask yourself if you are one of them ) who put their towels on a sunbed at some unearthly hour in the morning then didn't use it all day. Not having travelled much abroad I find this utterly selfish & no I do not accept the arguement that if someone else does it then we have to do it also. It's a good job that I did not particularly want one as I would not have hesitated to put them all in the pool. There is a clearly displayed rule that stated you were not allowed to do this but people of all nationalities still carried on with this selfish attitude. Incidentally 90% of guests this week were British!
OVERALL CONCLUSION:-
Comparing this years hol to last year at Club Siroco. The place seems as it is either under new management or a big attempt has is being made to improve it.
* It had definately had a big spruce up on the outdoor paintwork.
* The staff had improved & we felt more relaxed around them.
* The reception was defintely more welcoming.
* I felt comfortable regarding pool cleanliness
* The toilets near the pool & in reception were once again immaculate.
Unfortuntely there is still a need for improvement on the food front for my liking.
*Cold meat to go with salads ( I do know that salad is a course in itself for the spanish) but even a little cheeseor ham would please me (although there is a Netto only 5 mins walk away).
* More variety would be welcomed.
*Essentially & more importantly the temperature of food needs to be looked at seriously. ( I was never ill & didn't know anyone who was, luckily!!)
* I never touch pool snacks during the day as they could be leftovers from breakfast (which I think the sandwiches were) but pizza & the ice creams obviously wasn't)
I am not sure whether the standard of room is attributed to the difference in whether you are in the Green or Blue sides or the whether it is the difference between a one bed or two bed apartment. Being upgraded was a welcome surprise.
A minor thing was that reception, nor anyone else on the complex for that matter ever had any change in the manner of
1euro/2euro pieces. This only becomes a problem when you have two boys who want to play pool or go on the internet. Surely if you provide these facilities then it would be good customer service to have a stock as one presumed they get at least a 'take' of the profits. My advice is save your coinage if this applies to your family.
I will recommend one outside bar which was 'The Sandcastle' on the seafront at the very furthest end of Los Cucharas beach, round the corner from the surfing shops. Run by a lady from near Leeds & her family ,it may look a bit lived in, but they provide a really mean chilli & rice or indeed other choices & childrens food at a reasonable price , a play corner to amuse the little ones while you have a drink.( buy one adult meal mon-thurs 5pm-8pm & you get kids meals free) It was the best meal that I had all week, not because I didn't particularly like the food at Club Siroco but because it was good plateful of decent hot food & at a resonable price which would stand upto scrutiny anywhere!!
For a reasonably cheap break it did give reasonable value for money & any bits on the 'down side' I would like to think that even though the Canaries are an all year round holiday destination it was because our hol was early in the year.
I might be wrong, but I got the feeling last year that the reviews improved as the year went on.
If that is the case ,I am pleased that Easter is not going to be so early again until 2060.
Remember this is a budget stay, if you want luxury go & pay for it don't expect to find it here. It is not for the pretentious!
