Overall: Very nice place for a relaxing, quiet beach holiday.
Hotel was clean and efficiently run. Had a problem with our safe which was fixed in minutes. The staff were all helpful although this is more of a resort and not a hotel so requests which were out of the ordinary did not seem to be able to be met: My fiance asked for champagne for me to be brought to our room on the morning of my birthday (nice) but they could not do it. It does what it does well but it is not a 4* hotel with the service that usually comes with that.
The room was clean and spacious and well maintained for our week's stay. The beds were a bit uncomfortable though and the walls were paper thin - could hear our neighbour clearing his throat all night; which was nice.
We stayed half board and after about 2 days you get a bit bored of the buffet. It's the same room for breakfast and dinner and the food changes a little every day but is basically the same. The breakfasts are good - fresh omelettes made to order etc. and the food is generally good for buffet style but you would not go out of your way to eat there.
The only other restaurant is a pool side cafe for burgers, pasta etc. It's OK. We preferred to take picnics to the beach.
We didn't think the upgrade to all inclusive was worth it. It's now 20Euros per person per day. We only really had a bottle of wine and a couple of drinks throughout the day and the wine was reasonably priced at about 10-20 euros/bottle.
The other guests were almost exclusively German and the staff will speak to you in German rather than Spanish or English - but most of the staff seem trilingual and communication was never a problem. (By the way - have a look at how much salt German people put on their food - we were amazed!).
We went as a couple in our 20/30s. There breakdown of other guests was probably 80% middle aged and older couples and 20% young families. That suited us fine as we were not looking for nightclubs or entertainment.
The nearest beach is about 200m down the back of the hotel steps and extends to the right through several alcoves which you can get to while the tide is low. Otherwise it is a 1km trek across some rough ground to get to the nicer beaches. All were lovely though - clean fine sand (not black like in some parts of the island), clean water, plenty of space and privacy (but we were off peak). It didn't bother us but well over half the beach goers were naturists - the same demographic as the hotel - middle aged/elderly Germans so don't get too excited chaps. The naturists also insist on standing up for everything, eating, talking, reading a paper - all a bit strange but harmless.
The resort of Costs Carma where the hotel is based is not as developed as the northern part of the island. There are a few shops and a few hotels but it was quite a sleepy place (but remember we were off-season).
Eating out was a bit of a problem. We couldn't really find many places which were not just cafes or German pubs but Mama Mias opposite the SPAR supermarket was nice. Order the "small" size food as the "normal" main courses were huge. We had a very nice selection of fish but we could barely finish a third of it - must have been more than 1kg of actual fish and shell food!
The hotel is at the very end of the resort so about a 1km walk down hill to the nearest shops.
We had hired a car for the week which was very useful for nipping to the beaches (you can drive over the rough ground if you're lazy). Had a couple of days of rain so took trips up the North and to Antigue in the middle. Also went to the busier town of Morro Jable just 20 minutes further down the coast (huge sandy beaches).
The roads are very good. Next time we would consider hiring a 4x4 as there are really nice beaches (apparently) at Cofete but that is only accessible if you go down about 10-15km of unmade road. We gave up after about 10 minutes as we thought our Renault Clio would not like it much more. A couple of people had stories of getting stuck with normal cars and not being insured on the unmade road. Check with the car hire people that you would be insured if you do take the 4x4 option.
All we wanted from this holiday was a quiet beach, nice food and no disturbances. I would say we go lovely quiet beaches, reasonably food and we hardly spoke to a sole. If that's what you're after I would recommend it highly.
