Look up the climate in Chennai/Pondicherry and the chances are you´ll find the words hot, wet and humid. Not surprisingly then, this old museum of an hotel is damp, musty and full of mould. On top of that, the TV reception is partially unacceptable and the AC is unreliable. The rooms on the ground floor are particularly bad as they do not have any direct sunlight. The musty stench is atrocious. Besides, the bathrooms do not meet the minimum standards for a hotel in this price category. Having complained to the manager about one of the downstairs rooms (2,800 rupees), we were upgraded to a room on the first (GB) (second US) floor (3,200 rupees) at no extra charge. At least this room had windows offering plenty of natural light and it was possible to air the musty room. Nevertheless, there was mould on the beams and the mattress stank and kept us awake at night. The hotel room door had quite wide gaps in it, offering a great view to any peeping toms passing by. The TV worked most of the time, but there were frequent interruptions of the signal. Complaints didn´t help as it was Christmas time and the TV engineer didn´t seem to care, apparently. The manager and his staff are so fed up receiving complaints, they asked me to lay it on the line with the owner, Mr. Menet. Just before I left, I told him on the phone what I thought of the place and didn´t pull any punches. His excuse was the heavy rain, but if he doesn´t sort out the damp problems, he won´t have any guests staying at all in future. Anyway, what about the TV and AC ??
For five nights, we paid 14,000 rupees in advance, and to be fair, Mr Menet granted us a refund of 10 percent.. The attached photos clearly show the state of the place - judge for yourself whether you really want to stay there before a makeover costing hundreds of thousands of dollars is finally carried out. By the way, there´s a good French restaurant called "Le Cub" in the grounds of the hotel, but its management is completely separate from the hotel´s; they merely rent the premises.
