My family and I have just returned from son bou in Menorca, this was our first ever visit to Menorca, I must say , that I would not ever go there in may again, the weather was not good and there really is nothing to do when the weather is bad. I have 2 sons aged 12 and 7 and they were very bored, the pool was lovely and so was the beach, lovely sand and clear waters but too cold to go in. The hotel is virtually on the beach and stretches for miles. The island itself is the most expensive I have ever been to.
We stayed on a half board basis at the sol milanos pinguinos, we were in the Milanos side, The pinguinos side was not open . We were on the 5 th floor. The hotel was very large about 250 rooms and 11 floors, first impression was good , very clean and quite modern looking, staff friendly although they didnt speak very much english, the prices in the hotel very crazy we went into the bar one evening and we had 2 cocktails and 2 bottle of coke and it came to £15..,.. The food was a buffet for breakfast which included drinks, the evening meal was buffet aswell but drinks were extra bottle of water was 2 euros each. There was a lot of food, but most of it was either cold , raw or too greasy. we did not enjoy the food at all and it was the same every day. The pastries at breakfast were very nice though, but you get sick of them after a week. The lifts hardly ever worked, with waiting time upto 20 minutes. The room was very cramped, especially for a family of 4 . we had a small balcony which had a nice view. There was no kettle in the room , which I found annoying after a few days, The maids come round between 8.30 and 10.30 which are the breakfast times. There was not really much to do at the hotel the entertainment in the evening was run by the hotel , not very good , I booked the holiday with thomson and we did not see a rep the whole time we were there. The hotel rooms did have a tv but the channels were mostly spanish , with a couple of german channels and 2 english news channels. My advice for a family would be to take a portable dvd player and some movies, just in case the weather is bad and the kids get bored , take a kettle and an adapter with some tea and coffee. if going in May check weather forecast and take some warm clothes as its a very windy island. be prepared to take cash as I didnt find anywhere in son bou that excepted cards, thats including Mahon airport on the way home. We rented a car for 3 days ( which was 90 euros )and explored the island, Mahon was nice and we took a glass bottom boat trip which was 30 euros for a family of 4 , lasts about an hour and was nice. Dont bother going to there so called zoo though , it was a little farm with a few farmyard animals very smelly and the animals didnt look very happy, that cost us 30 euros for the family . on the whole I wouldnt go there again, too expensive and not enough for the children to do, ok if you are an older couple without children, but I would wait until the better weather. not really much night life for young couples . Watch out for the cocKroaches at night!!!!
