“First time abroad with our 22 month old”

Sol Milanos Pinguinos

8 Jul 2008

Location of the hotel is great. Right on the beach and the restaurants and shops are all on the doorstep. Not too far from the airport and only 2 hours on the plane. The hotel was full of families with young kids which made life easier at meal times. The food is OK at best. Breakfasts are the best. Most of the time it's just very bland, but that seems to be the case with many Spanish hotels. The pool is very cold but a good size. There is an excellent play area - indoor and outdoor - and other good facilities for kids. The rooms are not that big and a bit shabby but we felt that the other benefits of the hotel outweighed this. There was entertainment each night. Our son was too young but it looked like they'd made an effort. There are a number of restaurants and bars nearby but everywhere seemed quite pricey. Staff were good and overall I'd recommend it, particularly if like us, it's your first time abroad with a toddler.

“Great Hotel and Beach”

Sol Milanos Pinguinos

27 Jun 2008

We recently visited this resort as part of the package holiday with Thomas Cook. There are two hotels - Sol Milanos and the Pinguinos. The Pinguions seems to be more geared towards children. Overall we had a great stay and would have no problems recommending this hotel. It is about 30 mins from the airport. The hotel itself is well maintained and the room was good. I would say it's an average size for a European hotel, although for 4 people it would be cramped. The majority of rooms face the sea and the view was fantastic. The only negative would be the beds which felt cheap and springy. It is a Flintstones themed hotel but it's done subtly and is not in your face.

The buffet is in the morning from 08:00 to 10:30 and evening dinner from 06:30pm to 10:00pm. Although other reviews have complained, we had no problems with the food. It was always in plentiful supply and a wide range from healthy options to junk food. It was cooked to a high standard and very delicious. There are also plenty of restaurants outside the hotel where you can eat.

The entertainment was mainly geared towards children and families. All the employees spoke good English and were very friendly and fun. We also spent time in Son Bou which is just outside the hotel. You can walk around it in 10 mins. There are a number of bars and we spent a few nights in the Copacabana which had good tribute acts. A cocktail was around 7 EUR and a beer 3 or 4.

The beach was beautiful. The sea is crystal clear and the sand soft and golden. It is very shallow and you can walk out a good 50 meters before it starts getting deep. It is right beside the hotel. The pool area does get crowded in the afternoon. We also caught the bus into Mahon which takes about 40 mins. It cost 2.20 one way and the bus stop is just on the left outside the hotel. It runs frequently through out the day and timetable are available here www.tmsa.es

Overall, this is a great hotel for families with children or those looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday. The weather was great all week 23C with blue sky days. For one week's holiday it was great but 2 weeks might get a bit boring. It was great value for money and certainly exceed our expectations for the money we paid.

“Great location, fantastic beach, OK hotel”

Sol Milanos Pinguinos

26 Jun 2008

Went there with my wife and 8month old baby, just outside the school holidays so it wasn't too busy with kids. We took a taxi to/from the hotel from/to the airport which worked out at about 25 euros each way.

Hotel's location is excellent, right at then end of a long sandy beach. From the hotel pool there is a short board walk to cross and you are on the beach so it was quite easy to spend time between the beach, pool and hotel without having to keep moving your stuff around or packing up (useful with a little one, feeding, nappy changing, etc). Pool area is nice - although water was freezing - it felt warmer in the sea!

Hotel foyer is nice but the rooms are a bit small and shabby. On the plus side all the rooms have a sea view with a small balcony. We went half board, the breakfasts were good and the evening meals were OK - plenty of choice but not the best quality food. Staff were frie ndly enough and most spoke OK english.

Childrens entertainment and nighttime entertainment were mediocre at best - but that didn't bother as its our son was too young to appreciate it and we are not into that kinda stuff. There are a few bars and restaurants in the area and thats about it. Not the place to go if you are after a busy nightlife.

Not bad all in all, we got what we paid for and the location/beach and sea view room were a real bonus.

“dont go in May”

Sol Milanos Pinguinos

23 May 2008
0/1 found this review helpful

My family and I have just returned from son bou in Menorca, this was our first ever visit to Menorca, I must say , that I would not ever go there in may again, the weather was not good and there really is nothing to do when the weather is bad. I have 2 sons aged 12 and 7 and they were very bored, the pool was lovely and so was the beach, lovely sand and clear waters but too cold to go in. The hotel is virtually on the beach and stretches for miles. The island itself is the most expensive I have ever been to.
We stayed on a half board basis at the sol milanos pinguinos, we were in the Milanos side, The pinguinos side was not open . We were on the 5 th floor. The hotel was very large about 250 rooms and 11 floors, first impression was good , very clean and quite modern looking, staff friendly although they didnt speak very much english, the prices in the hotel very crazy we went into the bar one evening and we had 2 cocktails and 2 bottle of coke and it came to £15..,.. The food was a buffet for breakfast which included drinks, the evening meal was buffet aswell but drinks were extra bottle of water was 2 euros each. There was a lot of food, but most of it was either cold , raw or too greasy. we did not enjoy the food at all and it was the same every day. The pastries at breakfast were very nice though, but you get sick of them after a week. The lifts hardly ever worked, with waiting time upto 20 minutes. The room was very cramped, especially for a family of 4 . we had a small balcony which had a nice view. There was no kettle in the room , which I found annoying after a few days, The maids come round between 8.30 and 10.30 which are the breakfast times. There was not really much to do at the hotel the entertainment in the evening was run by the hotel , not very good , I booked the holiday with thomson and we did not see a rep the whole time we were there. The hotel rooms did have a tv but the channels were mostly spanish , with a couple of german channels and 2 english news channels. My advice for a family would be to take a portable dvd player and some movies, just in case the weather is bad and the kids get bored , take a kettle and an adapter with some tea and coffee. if going in May check weather forecast and take some warm clothes as its a very windy island. be prepared to take cash as I didnt find anywhere in son bou that excepted cards, thats including Mahon airport on the way home. We rented a car for 3 days ( which was 90 euros )and explored the island, Mahon was nice and we took a glass bottom boat trip which was 30 euros for a family of 4 , lasts about an hour and was nice. Dont bother going to there so called zoo though , it was a little farm with a few farmyard animals very smelly and the animals didnt look very happy, that cost us 30 euros for the family . on the whole I wouldnt go there again, too expensive and not enough for the children to do, ok if you are an older couple without children, but I would wait until the better weather. not really much night life for young couples . Watch out for the cocKroaches at night!!!!

“Lovely Sandy Beach”

Sol Milanos Pinguinos

14 Nov 2007

Travelled with hubby and 2 daughters aged 3 and 1. Very children based hotel. Arrived towards end of season.

Animation team, chef, kitchen staff and reception staff must have been worn out or something. They didn't really seem bothered to do much work. Animation team were friendly and did put on some good shows but didn't feel they needed to make any effort to get the kids to do anything. Reception staff only interested in playing solitaire on the computer or having a chat.

Food tended to be quite cold. Pizzas were usually like cardboard. Definitely got the impression that they thought vegetarians were mad and weren't interested in catering for these tastes. Loads of people were ill in the hotel (including each one of us) and I can only put it down to the poor hygeine and quality of the food.

Cleaners were great and hotel was very clean.

Beach was lovely and just behind the hotel. Swimming pools were lovely. Evening entertainment was great for the family. My 3 yr old loved the shows and the music.

Son Bou was a quiet and pretty resort with the loveliest stretch of sandy beach. Sea was shallow and great for kids.

Lots of young families ... the kids made lots of little friends.

On the whole loved the holiday. Hotel itself was great and is probably a bit better in peak season when the staff are fresher. Rooms are a little small but the location is superb. However, the quality of food in the hotel was awful. Lots of the eating options were closed as peak season had ended.

I would go back in peak season when the kids are older as the beach and resort is great.
