We booked to stay here for two nights at 320 Euros for the two nights, on a recent visit to Champagne, one of our favourite parts of France. When we arrived we drove up to a really beautiful, very old chateau, via the bridge over the moat, yes a real moat that surrounds the Chateau. Reception is quite small, the staff are extremely pleasant and very helpful. We were staying in the Orangery, a group of rooms in a seperate building outside the moat which also contained the main Restaurant downstairs.
When we got to the room there was a slight smell of food but not enough to be an issue. The room was spacious, well set out and the bed very comfotable .... so far so good! Then we went into the bathroom! It was in severe need of being updated, a shower over the bath with an old glass shower screen the bottom of which had a dirty discoloured plastic seal to the bath side, it was coming away from the glass and had what can only be described as horrible brown gunge inside it.the grouting in the tiles was brown and very dirty, im afraid it is just not good enough!
Another thing that I was very disappointed with was when I asked if they would put a bottle of my own champagne in the fridge for me (There is not a fridge in the room) for us to drink in our room they refused saying it was company policy! I can fully understand if you want to consume drinks in the hotels public areas both inside and out that they would expect you to buy the hotels drinks, but in your room?? I thought this was extremely petty
The restaurant is in a very pleasant room and was fully booked both nights of our stay. Here again we found the very good and the not so good. Both of our starters were super, My wife had pan fried Fois Gras, one of the best she had tasted, I had lobster, cooked to a turn, moist and tender. The main course however was saddle of lamb and it was very disappointing, over cooked by quite a bit and and a bit tough, looking at the size of the cut this was a very big lamb!! my incling is that it was in fact a Hogget which is much older than lamb and therefore a much cheaper ingredient. We had just one plate of cheese between us and the choice and quality was very good indeed, we passed on the sweets but here is a chef who likes chocolate!! as the sweet trolly was populated by the stuff!
We chose to drink Champagne with the first part of our meal (of course) they had an offer on some bin ends of vintage Champagne, we chose one, it was flat, we chose another it was flat! so we went to the normal list and had a locally made bottle of Ruffin Millesime that was superb. The waiters reaction was however not so good, when i said the the wine was flat he " if you don't like it i can change it" I said it is not a matter of wether i like it or not the wine is not correct! on opening the second bottle the same reaction so i said please taste the wine for yourself (what any good sommelier would have done already) his response was "I have tasted this Champagne before!" to which I said this bottle? he said no! now at a 100 euros a bottle I would expect a better service.
Breakfast was a really nice affair with FREE CHAMPAGNE on offer, a first for me!
So all in all it was bit like the "Curate's Egg" good in parts, such a shame! I have given an average mark, on balance the good parts just didn't overcome the bad.
It could be so much better without too much effort!

We are happy to read your satisfaction about our “very helpful and extremely pleasant staff in reception, your spacious bedroom with very comfortable bed and the really nice affair for the breakfast with free champagne”.
Concerning your bottle of Champagne, I regret the misunderstanding when you asked us to chill your bottle: every day we put guest’s bottles in fridge and we offer this service for free.
I regret your deception about the lamb dish but I confirm that we cook only lamb. If you have found your saddle of lamb a bit overcooked, you'd let us know and we would have prepare immediately another piece less cooked.
I have taken good notes of your others comments in order to offer you a superb next stay with us.
