We have just returned from our fourth stay at the Riu Paraiso and once again we have had a wonderful 2 weeks. Check in extremely quick and efficient - I requested an extra pillow for our bedroom and it was there within half an hour. A couple of light bulbs failed whilst we were there and they were replaced within the day.
We always choose the older part of the hotel - the Palace side - which is a short walk from the main restaurants and bar - approx third mile - either over a covered 'bridge' or through the lovely, well tended, gardens. However, if you do not like the extra walking involved simply request the Club side, which is where all the action takes place.
The attention to detail throughout the hotel is superb. Cleaning is ongoing, the pool checked every day, cleaned and tested - crystal clear/ Lovely play areas for children and supervised activities for children by happy enthusiastic members of the staff. The evening entertainment seems pupular although we actually prefer to meet up with friends after dinner and sit in the spacious bar area. We did go to one of the professional entertainment evenings which was excellent. The earlier part of the evening there are various competitions and both adults and children join in.
We think the food variety is very good and although i have read some reviews saying it is all the same sort of thing every night, we find the choice offered is excellent. Different meat and fish all freshly cooked and a good choice of vegetables. Ok, maybe not top restaurant standard but then consider the value! Also, of course, unlimited food if that's what you want. Similarly with the drinks - again, not top end but adequate. We went to the Mexican restaurant and it was very good - made a nice change and we enjoyed the extra kick of spice! Tried the Chinese restaurant a couple of years ago but it didn't compare to the one we have in our hometown so we didn't bother again! We did try the Volcano night club last year - probably good fun for some, though pretty noisy!
Still seems to be the old problem of reserving sun beds which is a shame.
If you want to walk into Porto Del Carmen there are some good shops in the old part of the town and the harbour area below has some excellent restaurants. Alternatively you can catch a local bus which run regularly, or take a taxi, not expensive.
One word of caution - my husband wanted a battery for his camera and found that it was not compatable. Upon returning to the electrical store he was told they had a 'no refund policy' and ended up having to exchange it for something else. Also, it is worth having researched prices in the Uk before purchasing and this included perfumes and cosmetics - some are higher than here in spite of supposed tax free status.
We shall certainly return next year - it suits everything we go for. The weather was not wall to wall sunshine every day but we had sun most days, albeit a few cloudy mornings or afternoons. It did rain heavily but that was at night. Pretty windy this year - more so than usual. We like the variety of weather as it gives one a chance to walk and explore. The beach is long wide and clean.
