My fiance and I (a young couple in our 20s) have just returned from a 7 night half board stay at the Beatriz Playa.
CHECK IN - No problem with check in - there was only one other couple dropped off with us. Very quick and staff spoke good english
ROOM - Clean and spacious however there were a few flaws:
1) The door to the balcony needed repaired - it didn't glide open like it should. You could only pull it open far enough to squeeze through
2) I found the bed very uncomfortable. There were loads of broken springs which left a huge hole in the middle of the matress
3) There was a TV in the room but only 2 english speaking channels - CNN and sky news. I've stayed in other 3* hotels which had BBC, ITV and channel 4. Maybe telly is the last thing people think about on holiday but I like to keep up to date with the soaps and big brother!
There was a card operated safety deposit box which cost 21 euros for the week- no refund on this at the end of our stay.
FOOD - I wasn't impresseed with the cooked breakfast. It didn't matter what time we went, it was always cold. Dinner was ok. There was quite a good variety but got cold very quickly. Dinner mainly consisted of meat which varied from fried chicken, pork chops or steak (a different one each night), salads, chips, paella, meatballs, spaghetti bolognese, fish etc. As we were half board, we swapped some of our dinners to lunches so we could eat out at night. Lunch was much the same as dinner.
STAFF - Reception staff were pleasant, unlike the restaurant staff - the lady who greeted you at the restaurant never smiled once while we were there.
ENTERTAINMENT - All posters in the hotel for evening entertainment were in spanish so we steered well clear of it!
POOL AREA - Very clean and never had any trouble getting a lounger.
RESORT - Matagorda is a beautiful but quiet resort. I wouldn't recommend it for young groups who want to party non-stop. The beach is just across the road from the hotel. There are plenty of shops and bars. You can walk along the sea front to Peurto del Carmen, which is about a 45 minute walk although 5 minutes in a taxi will get you there and costs about 4 euros. Getting a taxi from the hotel is easy, just ask the reception staff and they will call a taxi which will pick you up at the door. Peurto del Carmen is a much larger resort with an abundance of bars, resturants, clubs, shops and casino. The biosfere shopping centre is situated towards the old town end of the resort.
All in all, the hotel itself was nice. They certainly do not cater for British guests. Some of the other guests thought nothing of queue jumping which got quite irritating after a while, they just showed no manners or courtesy towards other guests whatsoever. Despite the minor flaws we made the best of it and enjoyed our holiday but I don't think we'll be returning to the Beatriz Playa.
