The Barcarola Apts are quite deceiving. Hid behind a rather smallish entrance, the complex opens up to reveal a plethora of over 135 apartments and a spacious pool area. We had requested a first floor two bed apartment with a pool view for us and the kids (8) and (6) and were very pleased that we got exactly that. We were placed in Apt E1, overlooking the pool and our friends travelling with us, were put in the one bed next door E2. The apartments we were in, were those recently refurbished and ours, especially was very airy, and what with the Lanzarote breeze, we didn't need to worry about fans that seemed to be required by other apartments. Our apartment was on a corner and had a large terrace as well as a balcony, where leisurely lunches and a bit of the local vino were enjoyed.
The pool was very nicely laid out and the constant refreshing breeze kept you from cooking during the day. The kids enjoyed the pool and I have to admit so did I, especially the twice weekly water polo matches, which were always a good laugh. The entertainments package is run by a young chap, Paul, who I think was either Dutch or German. He spoke at least three languages fluently and he always kept things going from 10:30am with the kids club right through various activities throughout the day.
We tended not to venture too far, this being our first trip to Lanzarote, but there were that many restaurants within five minutes walk, there was never any need to explore too far, especially with kids saying "are we there yet - I'm hungry!" The kids tended to force the issue occassionally when we ate and we ended up in Joe Smokes and Jaspers a few times (primarily for the soft play area or the live music shows.) There are quite a few Tex-Mex places to eat and all were very nice. One night we found a lovely little restaurant right next to the sea down a flight of stairs. I'm sure it was called Terrazzo Playa. Great views and nice food. Lovely Italian (Anticca) at the Barcarola entrance was also nice and we also sampled the buffets at the Slow Boat Chinese twice, which was great value for money.
At night, the wind never let up and even in the height of summer, you needed an extra layer on if you were open to the winds. One night at the Mini Golf, I admit to being cold, not even warmed by the free post dinner liquers offered at nearly every restaurant.
Our only downside, was the fact that out flight back was 22:00 and we had to be out our room at 12:00. They do have a good sized left luggage room and offered us a complementary room to shower and change. These rooms are in the older part of the complex (blocks L and M) and were not a par on the newer rooms. The Barcarola, despite being just back from the main road, was not noisy and the area was always perfectly maintained and tidy. if going, I would definitely ask for rooms overlooking the pool, as these far surpass the others.
Enjoy!
