this is our 10th visit to this fantastic hotel the new manager (paco) is right on the ball and a vast improvement to this great hotel. our good friend yaildy at the front desk, made sure our same room was clean, fresh, and ready for us. the maids made sure it was kept that way for our stay. the fridge was kept re-freshed with our free drinks, the balconey cleaned everday, the sheets clean, the bathroom towels changed everyday.
now the food in the buffet is a vast improvement, with our new chef he is like a demented wasp, buzzing around you to make sure your food is hot and to your liking, he is very hands on and the menu is a great improvement, one meal he made a fish short cut bake, and asked me what was in it, as im a fisherman and love seafood, i told him crab, bass, lobster, mussell, one out of three was not bad was his reply. this was the finest seafood bake ive tasted fit for any world wide restaurant.
it was also a very nice touch for re-peat guests, the lobster+beef, lunch for the thanks for our returning nice one( paco) the new manager makes you feel like a long lost family member and his personal touches makes you feel like one.
the beach party is a cracking theme to watch, the two brothers that do the martial arts, show are fantastic to watch, they work very hard and are very well trained. also the girls from the dance do a fantastic act, this show gets better everytime i watch it.
now as a avid fisherman and this is the main reason i go to cuba, we have been promised time and time again, that the pier is going to be finished, not only for the fishermen+women but also it is a fantastic venue, for the wedding party to take there pictures for the fantastic sea views, as a backing for the pictures.
(PACO the new manager is pulling out all stops, to get this important structure, to be finished, the timber for the re-build is now coming from brazil and it is a very good quality, the lads who are re-building it are re-piling it the tool they are using is a cut down h-girder with scaffolding tubes welded on to it very hard work, as they pile it into the sand up to two metres.
the sun came down for the two weeks we visited this hotel, hot,hot the pool was nice and cool not to cold, the whirlpool is now fixed, thanks to (paco).
the gardeners do a fantastic job in very hot conditions, the rooms are also getting a makeover, one by one, the room next to our was getting a full makle over, we did not encounter any noise at all. the food in the ranchon, is getting better under the direction of its fantastic chef (kikkie) who left for more intense training as we left.
the animation staff, all of them to many to list, as always are fantastic, the pool table has now being put back in the nightclub, (thanks paco) but the balls+cues must be re-turned to the bar by 11-oclock as the dancers+the guests dance when the show finishes.
the barmen in the nightclub are great guys (hi dariel+lucy).
the international is also better now (paco) is in charge, the service as always been good now its even better, the food is cracking but please remember its long pants and shirts, the twice we where there people where coming in in short pants and tee shirts, not on when you are going somewhere as classy as this.
never did any of the trips, done them all before, but i must recommend the speedboats, and the catamaran trip well worth the money.
pillar beach is fantastic, the new cafe and walkway are a vast improvement, the drinks are a little more expensive than the hotel but well worth it.
thje toilets at pillar are not flushing, you have to pay a peso for a girl or man to pour a bucket of water down when you are finished yuk.
on a last note ROLL ON NOVEMBER 2009 YIPPEEEEEEEEE.
if ive missed anything e-mail me i will and i will do my best to answer regards

Well this is our third trip back to the Melia and like I said in the title it just gets better, I think because we have got to know more people so they are more like friends now than staff.
I think if anything the food has improved this visit (as if it could have got any better), the fresh Red Snapper cooked for you while you waited was just perfect.
It was a lovely touch having a special meal with the management for repeat guests, that made us feel a bit special and we got to meet other repeat guests.
The only disappointment was there wasn't any weddings whilst we were there but it was the low season but still a nice time to visit.
Hopefully going back in October but unfortunately only for one week but thats better than nothing.

Arrival: May 2009
We just recently returned from a PERFECT vacation in Cuba, specifically in Cayo Guillermo. For the record, there are several Cayos (or small islands/keys: think Florida Keys), the largest of which (in this region) is Cayo Coco. This is where the airport is located, and generally you fly directly here. Arrival, immigration and baggage claim was swift, took no time at all and the staff was friendly. As we exited there was an agent ready to point you to the (airconditioned) coach bus that would take you to your respective resort. It took us about 40-45 minutes to get to Melia Cayo Guillermo.

Rooms:
Rooms were beautiful, a little tired, but WELL worth what we paid. There were two twin beds and despite the fact that it was not an ocean view room, our view was magnificent. The toilet in the bathroom does not offer the most powerful 'flush' fucntion, so throwing toilet paper in it would often prove to be a hassle. Our maids always did a great job of leaving the room neat and tidy, we were very happy with the level of service.

Restaurants and Bars:
Food in Cuba is famous for being bland, so I'm sure those who visit are prepared for this. We are not at all picky, so we really enjoyed everything the resort had to offer. There were 2-3 places to eat (Italian, beachfront Grill, fast food at the bar) that were open during most of the day. In addition to those mentioned above, the buffet would be open for 3-4 hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With your package you will most likely get 2 a la carte dinners, in which case you have the option to go to either the International or the Italian. Unfortunately, we forgot about both our reservations (pity, I know) so I can't tell you much about them!

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Beach, one word: FABULOUSSSSSSSS! I cannot stress that enough, everything from the sand to the crystal clear water. It was heaven, absolute heaven. We came for the beach, so much time was not spent around the pools, though as I recall they were heated. Grounds are well taken care of, you will see gardeners working all the time, keeping things as perfect as can be! Palm trees, beautiful flora and fauna...Cuba was paradise.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We did two paid activities in total, paragliding (which was ridiculously fun, and not at all scary!) and the excursion to mainland Cuba called 'Colourful Cuba'. It basically consisted of a scenic drive through the Cuban countryside to several organized activities. There was speedboating in a freshwater lake area (very entertaining), a visit to a crocodile farm where you're able to hold a baby one if you'd like to. Next we moved onto a sugarcane plantation and learned about slavery in Cuba as well as the sugar extraction process. We had a traditional Cuban lunch at a little restaurant in the country. Food was excellent here, for the record. Last, we ended up in Moron. This is the closest mainland town to the Cayos. This really gives you a sense of what everyday Cuban life is like. It's a great reality check.

Other Comments:
First thing I'd like to address is, tipping. Tip as YOU would like, and of course tip for good service. Keep in mind though, that these employees travel hours to get to the Cayos (since no one is permitted to live on them, as they are a protected wildlife area) and serve long shifts before they must travel all the way back. I tipped a peso a day to the maid, one each time we were served at a restaurant and a few here and there to the employees who prepared my food at the buffet. In my opinion, despite being in the middle of the rainy season, May is the ideal time to go. We encountered no crowds and there were always chairs available, both by the beach and the pool. We got the privacy of a swanky 5 star resort for a great, great price. I highly recommend the Cayos for couples and families alike, though not so much for singles. As it is a quieter area with little night life. All in all, great vacation and we WILL be returning again and again!

Well where do I start to explain this lovely and peaceful paradise.
My husband and I have stayed at the Melia Guillermo many times in fact this was our 12th time and will be counting the weeks till we return in Oct.
The hospitality that greets you on arrival at the hotel is just the best. These people are very good at their jobs in regards to making you enjoy your stay.
We have never once had to complain regarding anything throughout any of our stays as some people who make a point at telling on tryp advisor.
We meet people religiously on their returned visits so that says enough.
From the management to the gardeners are just so pleasant and loyal. If they can help you they will.
I disagree with some points when people say its not 5 star. Well it just depends how you look at it as it is CUBA and if they have it then you will get it.
Our room was spotless every day. Never need complain as the girls do a wonderful job. Towels changed every day and sheets. Excellent service.
The food is just delicious. The buffet in the morning very good and will always have something for everyone. The lunch time offer of the Ranchon has a variety of food to offer and I am sure it will suit everyones tast. The buffet at lunch again delicious. The Italian for lunch is delicious and of cours the Al a carte is very nice and must be visited.
These staff always wear a smile for us and after travelling on a bus for 1 and a half to 2 hours before they start I find it remarkable, then doing a full days work and looking forward to their return journey and getting home at some unearthly hour is just amazing before they have a few hours and start it all again.
Please give them some respect and realize they dont have it as easy as us when we can jump in a car or catch a bus every 5 minutes or a train when we want.
I am sure you will luv this beautiful place as ther beach is just to die for. Cleaned religiously twice a day.
The pool gets lots of care and cleaned every day. Lots of beds around the pool and you will never struggle for them and also by the beach there are many. If there is any fishermen that is thinking of going then its fantastic. My husband and his friend are keen fishermen and find this place the best.
Pilar Beach is definately worth a visit that too is very nice but my favourite has to be the hotels.
Try and visit Moran where a lot of the staff live with their families. They are very proud of their city and luv it when guests visit.
My friends who we meet there May and Oct have visited many countries in the world but this has to be the best and this is why we return over and over.
Anyone thinking of getting married then this is just the place. Mary the wedding organiser does a wonderful job. We have seen many in the past they are beautiful, lovely gardens wedding gazebos and beautiful beach settings.
The lobby for drinks and the lovely terrace for drinks makes it a very nice meeting place. Go and enjoy.
S AND J.

We went to the Melia Cayo Guillermo for our honeymoon, with our 1 1/2 yr old daughter. I must say that we were pleasantly surprized..
The hotel is beautiful, the beach is just amazing, and the staff is really friendly. We enjoyed everything about this hotel. We saw a wedding when we were there, it was beautiful, they had decorated the grounds, there are various gazebos and one of them was decrated for them, it was next to a little pond, close to the beach.. it was just perfect.
We sent our daughter to the mini-club one afternoon, she loved it!! she wanted to go back, which made us happy because we got to relax a little!

However, it's not a hotel for partying, mosltly a hotel to relax and enjoy the view... great for a honeymoon.

The food was good, the rooms were nice.. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
