We have just returned from our first all inclusive holiday at the Kouzalis Hotel, Pinera, Cyprus. As frequent visitors to Cyprus over the last 30 years we did not know what to expect from this type of holiday as previously we have gone Bed and Breakfast or Half Board, this however appeared to offer the best value for money the way prices within Cyprus have escalated over the few years since joining the Euro.
We had an all inclusive holiday in Morocco last year so comparison on the 2 offerings was inevitable.
We knew from past visits that the location would provide a peaceful environment with good sea views and this we were not disappointed.
Overall we had an enjoyable holiday, mainly due to the staff and fellow guests at the hotel.
There were lots of pluses about the hotel, which were offset however by some minor minuses that if improved on would make this a really great location
The rooms were adequate in size, clean, reasonably comfortable beds and a more than decent shower in the bathroom. If you wish a decent view from the balcony you would be advised to pay a little extra for a side sea view on either 3rd or 4th floor, the other side of the hotel looks over flats and a car park.
The only disappointment was the lack of tea making facilities and water in the room (we had these as standard in Morocco) although we were able to negotiate with reception for this to be provided. Thanks to Nelia for looking after us so well over the whole of the 2 weeks
The restaurant offered a varied range of dishes operating 7 theme nights that were repeated throughout the 2nd week. The food was tasty and a reasonable choice on both the salad and cooked counters, the sweet offering was very poor unless you like lashings of Jelly, Ice Cream and Blancmange The major concern here was that the ‘HOT’ food was more ‘Warm or Tepid’, one of our party continually set it back to the kitchen to be micro waved, not really what you would expect especially as this was right at the start of the evening meal being served. George and his staff provide a tremendous service overall, drinks were served quickly and tables kept tidy of used plates and glasses. Whilst we did not partake in the morning or afternoon snack offering they did appear somewhat limited, our tip would be to use the main sittings whenever possible or you may be a little disappointed in what was available. Once again our previous all inclusive experience knocked spots off this.
The Pool was of reasonable size, cleaned to a very good standard daily and a great temperature for swimming our just splashing around. The downside here was whilst there were ladder type steps to enter from the side, these could have done with an extra step on them, most non swimmers however entered and exited by the stepped area at the shallow end. This was quite a challenge for a large number of the elderly and somewhat less than steady on their feet guests and provision of some hand rails would have made a world of difference. Having discussed this with hotel management it would appear that this issue had been raised last year but nothing was done about it. In this which is an adults only hotel with many older guests making up a large number of their clients we would have thought that safety issues would be of major concern.
Our final observation was that of the sundeck/ sunbathing area. This proved well situated, quite spacious with tremendous views of the sea. From previous reviews it appeared that sunbeds were in plentiful supply and that the early morning visit to get a bed was not required, this did not prove to be so, in fact for a couple of days beds were scarce, people were sitting on the grass and the animation team considered bringing some form of control, they decided not to and the hotel finally put more beds out to meet the demand. This area could have been improved by better eye to detail as the grass was rutted and uneven and the path was overgrown by grass and had an area near the pool bar that was in need of some major maintenance . Again this was pointed out to management who did not appear to be too concerned.
The pool bar was well stocked , opened at 10.0am where Olga, Andreas and the team offered both an effective and friendly service in what must have been a very hot and challenging environment.
So to sum up. If this was a school report it would say ‘Does well, but could do better, an eye for detail would show a marked improvement on performance.
Would we return? Maybe, maybe not. If the negative issues were dealt with then it would be a maybe., we will watch trip advisor reports to see if this happens.
