My partner and I just got back from 2 weeks travelling in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands and wished that we stayed longer at the Signum. Those looking for typical resorts and sandy beaches should not bother with the Aeolians. Upon arrival at the Signum we felt as if we were visiting distant relatives rather than checking in to a hotel. Mornings were spent lounging at the pool, then lunch, then hopping on a scooter and exploring the other areas of the island like the "beach" at Pollara and local wineries (be sure to stop in and see Francesco Fenech and the Virgona family vineyards for some delicious Malvasia), then back to Signum for dinner. After a cocktail on the patio overlooking Stromboli and Panarea in the distance we were ready for bed, completely satisfied. My one wish was that there was no TV in the room. Not speaking Italian, the only English language stations we could find on the satellite TV were European news programs which, unlike the news in the US, were pretty bleak.

We chose the Signum from its pictures in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith's book. We had worries as when we looked it up in another guide, it said it didn't have a pool.

It was just an old guide, but it does show how the hotel is gradually expanding and adding new and better facilities. A spa is rumoured to be next.

My wife and I found the hotel absolutely right for both our needs. We are basically incompatible, as she swims and I don't and she can eat anything and I can't. But we have been married for nearly thirty-nine years.

We couldn't fault the hotel or its service. If you want a beach then this hotel is not for you unless you are prepared to climb the steps to a rocky one, which has an excellent cafe.

Our room was light and airy with enough space for everything that you would take on a weeks holiday. the bed was comfortable and we had a nice balcony looking out over the pool.

But to me it was the food that made the hotel. I am a coeliac, which means I can't eat wheat, barley or rye. But they had no problems with my needs and always were correct. In fact the food was so good that we ate in the hotel every night. We just couldn't be bothered to venture out.

The hotel though was summed up, by when small appertisers were delivered before the starters, they would present me with something unsuitable, then say I wasn't having anything and then give me my own personal treat.

That is class.

I should also say that we met several people there, who go back year or year to the Signum.

We shall go back again, which is something we do rarely.

“A very Eolian hotel”

We went to the Signum for 4 days and added on another 2 days to our stay as we liked it so much. Food is very good with lots of modern dishes but still enough traditional cooking to keep my (Sicilian) husband happy. The winelist is extensive and full of interesting new Sicilian wines, the majority of which are very well priced at 18-25 euros.

Our room was simple but tasteful and comfortable and there were lots of lovely products in the bathroom.

The terrace is probably the most perfect spot for an aperitivo on Salina, the view of Stromboli puffing smoke out in the distance is unbeatable.

The hotel is located in Malfi, which is about 6 miles away from Santa marina where the ferry lands. The village is smaller than Santa Marina and doesn't have as much "nightlife" although the Festa del Patrone in the second week of August was quite fun!

Other reviewers have commented on the service which at times is a little erratic, but this is Sicily and the pace of life is just different. All of the staff were really friendly, smiley and helpful.

This hotel is out of this world. The pool is stunning, with a view of Stromboli, and the dining area and bar is beautiful. The isalnd is very very quiet, so lots of time was spent lazing by the pool with a cocktail. Rooms are simple, light and airy with more than the usual toiletries. Staff are extremely helpful and charming, especially those on reception and in the restaurant. The atmosphere is of total relaxation!
The only bad point is that the hotel is very expensive - I can't understand why this would be, as food/rent costs must be very low...
However it is well worth it and I would definitely recommend this superb hotel.

“I keep returning to Signum!”

I love this hotel for the following reasons:
1. The amazing location and views
2. Eating on the veranda at night (very romantic)
3. Sicilian food
3. The infinity pool
4.. The island life

There is a little supermarket near to the hotel where you can buy water etc (they also have a lovely deli counter)

I hired a small motot boat (about 10 minutes walk from the hotel to the boat hire shop) and spent the day touring the various locations around the island of Salina.

If you are wondering how to reach Salina there are either boats from Palermo port:[----]

or you can take a train from Palermo to Mallazzo and then take the Aliscarfi (small ferry) to Salina. If it sounds a bit daunting, I have taken the train on 2 occasions and although it takes about 4 hours, the train line runs along the coast and the views are great.
