“Fairytale Castle”

Chateau de Brou

This hotel was quite beautiful. We stayed here for two nights with our teenage children. The rooms were spacious and the decor was exceptional. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The first night we ate in the restaurant. We went for the five (or was it six?)course degustation menu, which was fantastic, and about the same price as having three courses a la carte. At about £40 per person it is not cheap.
We went for a walk in the woods when we arrived, which I would not reccommend in August, as the flies were unbearable. We were hoping to see the wild boar, which we had seen from the car on the drive into the car park.
On our second evening we went out to eat at the very good local restaurant La Ciboulette. On leaving the Hotel make your way back to the main road and turn left. It is about a mile up the road, by the roundabout. It was a lovely evening so we walked (about 30 mins), although the walk home was a little bit unnerving for our children. As city kids they are not used to such darkness. It was fun for us. You definitely need a good torch. Also, if you plan to walk, let the hotel know as they will have to open the gates when you leave and give you a code for your return.
This restaurant is well worth a visit. The food was wonderful and much cheaper than eating in the chateau again. But don't take my word for it. The restaurant has it's own website, so why not check it out.
We would defininitely go back to the chateau, though we may have to save up for a while.

On the foot of tripadvisor reviews we stayed here recently for three nights. On our arrival at 2.30pm we were met by a rather agitated loud receptionist who informed us that our room was not ready due to it having been a very busy weekend. No problem we replied and went for a lunch in a local restaurant we had seen en route. We returned 2 hours later and were shown to our room t-he soral room reached by a high spiral staircase situated next to their kitchen. No offer was made to help with luggage. The room was in the roof space large well decorated clean and comfortable. We ate at the hotel for the three evenings -the staff were very polite and the food generally was a good standard. Gillian deserves a special mention .However unfortunately there is no bar area which I think the chateau would benefit from. On our third evening we ate out on the lawn which was very pleasant. The local wildlife boars and deer put in an appearance .
The chateau is on 200 acres of heavily coppiced rather unattractive woodland which is stocked with deer and boar. What they omit to tell you is that there is a large powerful electric fence around the estate to contain these animals. There are no signs to indicate this. This in my mind is neglectful/negligent. We are both fit and healthy and in our ignorance got a bad electric shock from this fence elderly people may not fare as well .When we left the chateau we were contacted by phone 5 hours later and were told that we had left a small box with some toiletries in the room. We realised that this contained important medication and asked that they courier it /express it to us at our next hotel. We were informed by the same receptionist that we had met on day one that she was too busy and that it would be two days before she could organise it!!! We made alternative arrangements and agreed to collect it on the way back. This meant a diversion of 300 km. This in my opinion fell well below what we would have expected from this hotel.

all the other reviews below are true- this is a wonderful little place. We paid 115 EUR for the 'Belle de Bois Dormant' room and were not disappointed. the room was beautiful, with a great view of the grounds (saw wild boars roaming through the woods) with the toilet in a turret and the bathroom up a flight of stairs with an even better view. Very pretty, cute and romantic.

We ate in the chateau- food was excellent but of course not cheap (160 EUR with aperetif and wine). same goes for breakfast. (15 EUR per person)> but it was all worth it.

Staff was extremely helpful and friendly in a personal manner. We might come back next year...

We cannot recommend Château de Brou in the Loire Valley enough.

We were looking for a truly special place for our tenth anniversary – ideally a beautifully restored château (small castle) in the midst of some great wine country with easy access to some historic sites and palaces. We found it, with an additional bonus surprise. The food was absolutely superb – high end French cooking paired expertly with excellent wines from the nearby Chinon and Vouvray vineyards. The service was equally wonderful in a gorgeous dining room next to regal hearth. We ate away from the Château one night and regretted it.

If this was not enough, Château de Brou is set back in its own wooded game preserve, with controlled access through a private gate at the woods outer edge. An idyllic, peaceful surrounding to return to after a day bouncing around the Loire Valley seeing historic palaces and larger castles such as Chenonceau or Chambord. Usse is even closer, which was the source of inspiration for stories such a Sleeping Beauty. Even closer is a wonderful palace named Villandry, which was our favorite by far. A good plan is castle touring or antique shopping in the early part of the day, with wine tasting in the afternoon.

We spent four days and three nights, it was not enough. We stayed in the Ronsard room, on the third floor. It was nicely appointed with a comfortable canopy bed and beamed ceiling – a nice blend of elegance and rustic. The bathroom was also nicely done with his and her sinks. At the far end of the bathroom is a castle turret, refurbished to house a multi-head spa shower. We will be back!

Chateau de Brou is beautiful, but David and Agnes are what make it exceptional. David is the very talented chef and master of the kitchen. Agnes runs all the rest very capably, and really knows the Loire Valley.

Come prepared for an elegant, though relaxed, experience. This is a friendly place and English is one of the several languages happily spoken. Bring your manners, consideration of others, and openness to French customs and culture -- you will be rewarded with a memorable experience.

“Wonderful stop in medieval chateau”

Wonderful stay near Tours - Trip advisor member, Berks, England

Chateau de Brou is a medieval castle with a very inrteresting history, and its chapel is a historic monument. Surrounded by a magnificent park where deer and game roam freely, the entrance is guarded by a huge cast iron gate that is electronically controlled and quite daunting....

We arrived one wet afternoon to be met by a most charming chatelaine,a young lady that took us on a spiral staircase to our first floor room. Each room is named after a famous historic figure and ours turned out to be Gabrielle d'Estereles, the mistress of Henry IV of France, who was poisoned hte day before they were to be married.

The room had a huge baldaquin bed and in an adjacent turretted octogonal room, a bathroom with a roll top bath. We had read that the chateau was used as a childern's home after the war, and only converted into a hotel recently, but were very glad to see that the renovation had kept and improved all its original features.

The dining room was equally impressive: pannelled walls, painted beams, stone fireplaces, plush curtains and gold rimmed Limoges porcelaine settings

The chateau offers two menus, a normal and a degustation one, both with a number of choices, and both the food and the wines were excellent. The buffet breakfast was equally impressive, with a great choice of continental meats, cheeses, fruit, patisserie and home made cakes.

Although not exactly on the Loire, the chateau is a great stopping place for visiting the Loire valley, its famous chateaux and vineyards: it is close to Tours, Chinnon, Cheverny, and not too far from Chenonceaux and Amboise.

The staff were all extremely pleasant and helpfull, the food was delicious, and we would gladly recommend this find to lovers of history, beauty and great fare.
