“Peace and tranquility like you have never experienced before!”

Gran Hotel Son Julia

18 Jun 2008

If you like a quiet time this is the place for you!

A beautiful hotel with 2 lovely pool areas, very friendly staff, nice rooms and public areas - but very, very quiet. We were there at the beginning of June so expected to see a few other guests around, but it felt like we were the only people staying, especially in the evenings, and not in a good way! We did see some other guests at breakfast but perhaps others ate elsewhere at night since the resaurant prices were high, even for a 5 star hotel, (we decided to have fairly pricy but nice room service rather than eating in an empty restaurant - the location of the hotel makes it tricky to go out unless you drive or take a taxi - Palma itself is a 30 Euro taxi drive away.

The local town may have dining options but we did not venture there in the 3 days we visited - it looked slightly industrial as we drove past on the main road although others have said it is nice. In fact the location of the hotel is a little strange - no need to worry about booking a room with a view as the view is limited to surrounding roads and overgrown fields. We had a garden terrace room on the ground floor which had an outdoor seating area and small lawn which was fine and probably better than upstairs rooms with no balcony. The gardens around the hotel and pools are lovely, but most rooms wouldn't overlook these.

This place would make a great base for people who want a good standard of accom but prefer to go and explore the local area by car mixed with an option for a quiet time near the pool in between trips, but for more than one night of relaxation the lack of atmosphere due to lack of other guests didn't make it a very fun place to be in the evenings. We left confused since overall our experience was good - this lovely hotel and it's facilities should really be better used? Maybe the price of dinner and drinks could be the issue? The DVD rental service was handy though!

“Out of this world!”

Gran Hotel Son Julia

13 May 2008

My boyfriend and I have stayed at several Stein Group hotels and this one does not disappoint. We knew it would be good but it was better than expected. First, the hotel is set in a secluded, calm and quiet area but it is so close to Palma (15 minute drive) and the airport (10 minute drive). Very convenient. Beautiful grounds, with experienced and helpful staff.

What I loved most about the hotel is that even though it was fully booked, we felt looked after and the grounds were still relaxed and calm. We went at the start of May and the temperature was perfect - 26C everyday with plenty of sunshine. The pools were great for cooling off, and the staff were quick in bringing you whatever exotic drink you want.

The small touches - free DVDs, chocolates on your pillows, amazing linens, free fruit in your room, free access to the spa pool, sauna and hammam as well as the excellent buffet breakfast (complete with tailor-made omlettes and coffee drinks of all kinds) - made our stay pure heaven. The staff are friendly and open, and the whole stay is very zen and relaxing.

We'd go back in a heartbeat!

Tips:
-You do need a car; a must! We rented a great Mini Cooper for 5 days from the airport for a very reasonable price. Book in advance though; car rentals are popular on the island and the lineup at the airport was long.
-Also, if you are on a budget, plan on getting a few bottles of water and snacks at a local store to tied you over throughout the day - the breakfast is wonderful but lunch is very pricey! (50 euros for two, without any wine). Dinner was good, but again, expensive for what it was (I live in Paris and eat amazing food on a regular basis for much less). Palma has great cheaper tapas bars that are open late.
-Enjoy the DVDs, we saw some great oldies!
-The large pool is heated, the small one is not.
-Children: kids seem welcome here (there is a menu for kids with fries, etc) and there is more than enough space for them to run and play.
-Girls trips: There was a group of British girls there during our stay - they seemed to have a great time but were overly loud, walking around topless and we heard them coming home at 4am in the morning: lots of fun, I'm sure, but please be respectful of the other guests! Gran Son Julia is a classy and relaxing place, girls trips might be better suited to Palma where there are bars, shops and sights to see, including a great beach.

We booked Son Julia on the basis of the reputation of its sister hotel Son Net. We were not disappointed. The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, always available. The facilities were good with both pools set in pretty well maintained surroundings.
Our room was beautiful, the soft furnishings were lovely and we enjoyed the chocolates left at turndown each night.
We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening and although expensive, the food was of a good standard. Perhaps not quite worth what we paid, we also ate in the Valdemossa spending a similar amount and having a much more memorable meal.
Staying at the hotel is absolutely dependent on having a hire car, as it is quite remote. That said it is well placed for trips to the mountains as well as being a short drive from the Es Trenc beach. Palma is also convenient by car.
We used the spa and although small, it was adequate and the masseuse was excellent.
All in all a very peaceful retreat but I would perhaps opt for the Valdemossa next time as the evening we spent there was exquisite.

My partner and I chose this hotel for a relaxing break away from the busy resorts of Majorca. The experience was one I would chose not to repeat.

The hotel itself is stunning and kept immaculately clean throughout. For the most part the staff are very friendly and try their best to make your stay pleasurable. The issues are with how it is run/managed. The service is incredibly slow and this is actually quite relaxing at first as you can take your time over meals. This became a problem as the hotel filled up.

With only 24 rooms, you would think they could cope but by only opening the outside at lunch and the main restaurant in the evening, there are simply not enough tables for the number of guests or at least not at the speed they serve you. You had to rush to get a table or risk not being fed until much later (we had to wait 90 minutes to get a lunch table for 2). They also open and close at random times, not as stated in the guide in the room. This would not be a problem if there was anything close by as an alternative but there is not. They cannot help their location but at least make sure your guests have a choice.

Functions took priority over guests. Guests were requested to eat outside one night so that some art function could take over. A reduced menu was served which had an equally reduced level of service. Despite complaining, the restaurant manager chose to shrug and agree. The meet and greet BBQ the following night was cancelled without explanation...a great idea but no commitment to follow it through.

We eventually gave up and 4 days into our 7 day break, hired a car and left, only returning to sleep.

Judging by the other comments on here, which we read prior to booking, we were either extremely unlucky (as the manager stated when we formally complained) or there are a number of others who have chosen to complain in silence rather than voice their opinions to warn others. We spoke to others during our stay to ensure we were not being unfair. They shared various complaints.

In summary, the building is fantastic and the more junior staff (and front desk staff) very friendly and helpful. It is however badly run/managed, overpriced and offers a very poor choice, service wise, for people intending to stay more than a couple of days.

In fairness to the management, we were offered a complimentary stay to demonstrate that these were exceptional conditions. We politely declined.

“Pure Luxury”

An excellent place to stay!

I stayed in a superior garden room, the room was very spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. Large Plasma TV in the room, only enlish news and CNN available ( plenty of spanish and german channels) however, there is a DVD player and a good selection of films at reception.

Staff were very efficient, friendly and the general service was excellent.

There is a lot of marble in the hotel and my only negative comment is that I could hear some noise from the room above due to the marble floor, but this did not prevent me getting a good nights sleep.
