We decided on the spur of the moment to take a Bank Holiday trip to North Wales, and hurriedly booked this hotel, being one of very few available at the last minute. Arriving at the hotel in mid afternoon, we tried to disregard the faded paintwork exterior, squeezed our way past the clutch of smokers loitering at the hotel entrance, and walked into the tired reception area. The note on reception said to speak to the barman of the hotel's public bar, if unmanned. The barman then took 15 minutes to track down somebody capable of checking us in - not a great start after a 4 hour drive.
The bedroom was clean and fresh despite the amateurishly installed lumpy wallpaper, and the bathroom clean with relatively modern fittings, but walls and ceiling were moisture stained and in urgent need of repainting.
There was some noise from the hotel's public bar below on both nights we were there, but it dropped to a tolerable level when the windows were closed. However there was nothing we could do to avoid the constant ringing of the fire alarm at 5.50am for 15 minutes, nor it's subsequent encore half an hour later.
Slighty disgruntled, we went down for breakfast at 9.30am. We found that the 'continental' breakfast was a choice from 3 boxes of Shreddies, with no sign of milk or juice. We asked the waitress if a cooked breakfast was available. She said yes, then spent the next 10 minutes studiously avoiding us in the otherwise deserted breakfast room. Time to leave!
Fortunately, there was no repeat of the fire alarm fiasco on the second night, so decided to check out and find somewhere else for breakfast.
Relieved to find reception staffed, we were then taken aback to be advised that the £140 bill was to be settled in cash only........despite having being booked online, and secured with a credit card, via a late booking website. An odd end to a bizarre weekend. Lesson learned, we'll always make time to check out reviews when booking accommodation in future!
