My husband and I just returned from Matangi Island and I have to say it was absolutely incredible. We actually chose Matangi due to reviews here at TripAdvisor and I have to say that the excellent reviews are right on the mark. We had a beautiful large bure that essentially gave us our own private slice of beach, own hammock, and to beach chairs. All the structures on the island are very carefully designed to stay true to island feel without neglecting luxury.
A few favorites of the trip that really made it remarkable for us:
1. The food was fantastic! I'm a chef and the fact that we were going to be on an island for 5+ days I wanted to make sure the food was good. Reviews here said the food was outstanding and they were absolutely correct. The food was definitely very well done and thought out.
2. You absolutely felt pampered without feeling like you were being waited on hand and foot (which can sometimes happen at fancier resorts). The staff was friendly and not at all standoffish.
3. Since there are only 14 or so bures on the island it really is a place to truly get away from everything.
4. It was very important to my husband and I that Matangi hires staff from one of the local islands which obviously helps support that village's economic structure. Matangi also makes donation to that village (and other organizations) and they are currently helping to rebuild the village school/new library. It meant a lot to us that Matangi truly does care about the people and environment around it.
Overall it was fantastic and I can't say enough about it.
