“Great venue, just mis-managed!”

Aldwark Manor

20 May 2008

After reading the other reviews, i emailed the hotel with my concerns and they assured me that these problems had all been addressed. This was a special birthday weekend and the staff worked really hard to make it special for us. They are just massively under resourced and there appears to be little process in place. The food is great (altho menu didn't change or have specials), the restaurant service was really friendly, but like headless chickens (chipped glasses, missing cutlery, lost table bookings, bread but no butter - complete lack of attention to detail). Breakfast waiting 30 mins for coffee and toast and hot buffet kept running out and you had to chase for refilling bacon etc. We had the Wensleydale Suite Room 315 - beautiful, well worth the money (if they upgrade the tv's to work and be modern). Housekeeping is obviously very under staffed as was 4 o'clock before room was serviced and then glasses weren't washed etc.
I have reported all the above to them on check-out as well as filled in their customer survey emailed after visit, still not heard anything from them since 4th May.
Hotel is full of potential, but beware of the above!

“not 4 *standards”

Aldwark Manor

5 May 2008

We booked this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary at £121,00 bed and breakfast in superior double room, I phoned the hotel in advance to ask if they catered for vegetarians and to see f I could have a prawn salad for my main course. I was told this would not be a problem. On arrival we were told our room was not ready but we could sit and have a drink while we waited.. 45 mins later I returned to reception to be told room would be another 15 mins. This meant we could not use the leisure facilities or use our tab at the bar as we did not have a room number. Twenty minutes later I was informed room was ready. On entering the room we were faced with twin beds. Having booked and paid for a double (also being wedding anniversary) I once again trecked back to reception to complain. Reception told me the room could be made into a bouble and they would send someone up. The maids came in and said it was ok the beds zipped together. This meant there was still a join between the two twins. We decided we could not be bothered to complain again and got ready for dinner. The menu states if you have any dietary requirements they will be happy to oblige. I asked the waiter if I could have a prawn salad and he said that should not be a problem. The waiter came straight back and said there were no prawns left. There was absolutely nothing on the menu that I could eat as a vegetarian. On the starters there was a vegetarian roasted vegetable starter that I did not like he sound of. The waiter asked if I would like this as my main course. I said no can I just have a plain salad of lettuce, cucumber, tomatoe, coleslaw etc. He said that would be fine. I joked with my husband saying I hope this is the biggest salad I have ever seen as it was now 9.00 pm and I had only had melon to start. When it came I could have cried - it was the roasted veg salad which was the starter I had declined. There was no salad only water cress with cold roasted cherry tomatoes with some awful potatoe salad on top. I could not eat this at all. Mind if you eat meat my husband said the lamb was lovely. BUT there was a £3.00 supplement on the lamb dish for some reason. As I was still hungry I had the cheese board at £5.00 BUT there was also a £3.00 supplement on this. A bottle of white wine was 20.00. Well I could still go on as there were a few other minor problems. At £210.00 for this stay I would say hotel needs to up its standards significantly. On checking out party of 8 in front of me had been over charged £185.00 too much on their bill and another couple who had stayed at this chain of hotels in Glasgow were there on a free night to compensate for the Glasgow hotel. This was a very dissapointing anniversary present We will never go back. Couple from Newcastle 05/05/2008

Stayed here in November 2007.

My boyfriend booked this as a suprise and the hotel is lovely. (Im hinting for him to take me back there)

The room was lovely (four poster room in the old side of the hotel), very spacious , fantastic views over the golf course.

Spa is great......

The food in the restaurant is lovely, and the service is great too. Lots of choice and for a three course meal for two with a bottle of wine cost £75 which is extremely reasonable

Service from hotel staff 5*-

If you want to spend a relaxed weekend away in nice surroundings this is the place to stay!

“Excellent hotel, superb setting”

Aldwark Manor

22 Apr 2008

We had a wonderful stay at the Q Hotel: Aldwark Manor this weekend Sat 19th and Sunday 20th April 08.

We had a twin room which was immaculately clean.

The only problem we faced was rectified promptly by the pleasant staff:
The electric heater was broken, they sent someone to sort it out and after dinner when it still didnt work properly they promptly sent someone with a portable convection heater which served the purpose well.

The room was typical of a well equipped Q hotel: Hairdryer coffee and tea, ironing board and iron, toiletries etc

We were extremely impressed with the dinner in the hotel restaurant ( we had booked a dinner package) . The food was delicious... and served promptly and with courtesy.

It took about 30 - 40 mins to drive to the centre of York and yes you will need 40p to pay for the toll bridge depending which direction you come from.

The hotel is set in the grounds of a golf course and is in a beautiful setting.

We stayed there on the recommendation of our travel agent.
It was a little farther from York than we had hoped but the countryside was beautiful. We were not expecting to the smell of organic fertilizer though. It would knock you over. We almost didn't stay, and were about to ask for a refund but since we were spending most of our time in York we stuck it out. It was brutally hot during our trip and it only rained 1 day of our 10 days in England so that may have had something to do with the manure smell.
Our room was in the new section and very very nice. No air conditioning though. There were 2 functions one night and we enjoyed talking with some of the people in the wedding party.
We ate one meal in the dining room and it was very good. Much better than we expected. Everybody in the dining room was great to us.
There was a funny staff moment when they were moving a table stacked with china plates. You can guess what happened next.
But once the plates started crashing to the floor they didn't put the table down, they just kept walking down the hallway as the plates continued to shatter. Everybody in the Hotel stopped in their tracks.
We also really enjoyed going to the church across the lane from the Hotel. We were surprised to see a toll bridge but it was open when we crossed, so we didn't have to pay.
I doubt that we would stay in the Hotel again. The lack of A/C was a little shocking for us Americans, but we had the same problem at the Hotel we stayed at in Stratford Upon Avon, which I believe is owned by the same company.
