I had made a reservation for 5 nights for a short holiday trip to Yorkshire.
Upon arrival, nobody came out to help with the suitcases. While I was parking the car, my wife checked in and was welcomed by the receptionist with a simple "can I have your creditcard".
Walking back from the parking area I noticed a smokey odour. The perimeter of the hotel was covered with cigarette stubs. There was an empty pack stucked away under one of the entrance stairs. It looked derelict, not very welcoming and it smelled dirty.
Our room, a king suite, was in the new part of the hotel. There was again nobody to assist with the luggage. The suite was split level. Bathroom downstairs, bedroom upstairs. The view from the bed was on two fire doors, one exiting into our room from an unknown space behind it, one was to exit the bedroom. It didn't feel very comfortable, let alone romantic, that our bedroom was a passing-through place.
We went to the reception and asked for another room but were told by the receptionist, who was meanwhile swearing into her telephone that (###profanity###) nobody was working in the hotel, that we could come back the next afternoon to see what was possible as there was nobody from housekeeping available (!!!)
We walked around the outside of the hotel and saw it was dirty. Cigarette stubs all over the place, empty glasses (days old), dirty paper napkins stuck inbetween the wood of the terrace tables, full ashtrays galore.
The carpet in the walkthrough to the garden next to the kitchen was completely covered in dirt and smelled of cigarettes, thanks to a full ashtray next to the entrance (and this was approximately at 3 pm - the ashtray was still full when we went down for breakfast the next morning).
We had a drink in the bar, where everything was covered in dust and stains. We proceeded to the restaurant, where we were the only guests for a while but didn't get any service from the 4 staff standing around. I asked the waiter to inform the kitchen that my wife has an extreme fish and shellfish allergy. The reply was curtly that "chef couldn't guarantee anything" - not very encouraging and even a bit rude. We received the bread and the wine after we had finished our starter, even though we had asked for it several times. The cutlery and glasses were dirty.
In bed, I saw dustwebs floating in the heat of the bedside lampshades. The Velux window in the bedroom didn't have a proper curtain so we woke up at 5.30 am because of the light. It was then that we decided to leave. We didn't mention our complaints to the receptionist (the same as the day before) as we didn't want them to even try and solve the problem - we just wanted to get out of the place. So I lied and told that we had to return suddenly because of family matters. I've never done something like this before. In hindsight, the e-mail correspondence with the hotel when inquiring and booking, was also not very friendly and professional.
We drove to Bolton Abbey and had a truly perfect stay at The Devonshire Arms - highly recommended!
Although it may sound fussy, we are experienced travelers and do not mind paying a bit more for a good hotel - but it must meet at least some of our expectations, and in the case of "Faultwark Towers" as we soon started to name it, it was a complete and utter disappointment. At the real Fawlty Towers, we could at least have had a laugh!
