We made a last minute decision to take a weeks holiday before the end of June and we were very fortunate to find the TBH whilst surfing the internet. The exceptional comments from other guests are, for the most part, fully justified. To be collected from and returned to the airport is the ideal way to top and tail the holiday. Niko is a genial host who keeps a careful watch over all aspects of the day-to-day running of the hotel and has clearly inspired all his staff to make every effort to ensure that time spent at the TBH is as enjoyable as possible.
The hotel is in a superb location, with stunning views across the Ionian Sea towards Zakynthos. The area surrounding the hotel is largely undeveloped and in consequence it is a perfectly peaceful place to stay.
For anyone who is reasonably fit and who enjoys walking there are beaches (Trapezaki Bay and St. Thomas) and tavernas ( try Gefiri or Crystal Palace, both on the road to Lourdas) within 15-45 minutes on foot. Walking in the area does however involve some rather strenuous uphill/downhill exercise. If this is not your cup of tea, then hiring a car (which Maria will arrange) is advisable. Driving on Kefalonia is not a stressful experience.
We were struck by the number of guests who had had multiple stays at the hotel (one couple was on their ninth visit). Many of the other guests enquired of us how we "discovered" their secret. We were surprised at this curious devotion. Perhaps this is why there is such a reluctance by previous contributors to impart even the slightest suggestion of any criticism of the hotel. There are imperfections. Perhaps the most important relates to night time comfort. The mattresses are, shall we say, rather firm. To be fair to Niko he did supply my wife with a foam mattress topper which made sleeping possible. There were several other guests who would have liked something similar but there are only a limited number of these bed toppers available. If you value a good night's sleep I would suggest you make this arrangement with the TBH in advance of your visit.
The food is good, but not exceptional. Niko has Anglicised the breakfast (bacon, baked beans, fried eggs etc) but disappoints with some of the more basic items. Fresh fruit juice and a wider variety of fresh fruit would be a welcome addition to the breakfast experience. The dinner menu is limited in its Greek dishes, and it therefore acts as an incentive to seek out other local eating places. The only variation was a barbecue on Saturday night (not especially cheap at 28 euros pp) and it proved to be identical to the food served on the other evenings except it was cooked outdoors rather than indoors. This was our first experience of Kefalonian wine and even if we return to the island we will be steering well clear of it. Niko's house wine (poured out of plastic containers) is an interesting but never to be repeated experience.
Would we return? If we were to visit Kefalonia in the future, yes we would. The few negatives are hugely out weighed by the many good things about this hotel.
