Beautiful location in the midst of stunning countryside. A small hotel in idyllic setting. Room was beautiful, with great view and lovely bathroom. We stayed one night after visiting coast near Filey. Meal in the restaurant was excellent, as was the wine and pre dinner canapes in the lounge. Breakfast was very good, with local produce and attentive service. Only negative would be we struggled to find someone when we wanted to check out. Nice swimming pool and tennis, although we didn't use either. Recommended for a peaceful weekend away from the kids!

We stayed here for a weekend break (Saturday and Sunday night). Overall I was happy with the hotel, the luxury room we booked was fantastic with huge sleigh bed and beautiful bathroom.

I found the staff a curious mix of either overly efficient and cold or rather bumbling but friendly.

We were told that we could only have dinner at 7pm because the restaurant was busy. We declined and upon leaving the hotel to go out for dinner at 8pm the restaurant was virtually empty.

Breakfast portions were small but the food was good.

My Fiancee received an electric shock from the electric fence that surrounds the horses' field next door. A sign warning of this would be a good idea.

A large conference party arrived on the Monday morning and we felt rather crowded out. Service during check out declined rapidly as a result.

“Excellent dinner”

Burythorpe House

2 Apr 2008

We stayed at Burythorpe House on a Monday night in March and virtually had the place to ourselves - which was just like having a grand old house all of your own!

The public areas of the hotel are very nicely done - lovely lounge and dining room, well decorated and cosy.

Our bedroom was a very good size and the bed was enormous and extremely comfortable. The view over the fields to the village and church was wonderful. We were a bit surprised that there were no extra touches in the room though - for the price a complimentary port/sherry or some juice would have been a good inclusion.

Dinner was quite simply superb. The quality of the food and the cooking was excellent, as was the service. The wine list is good as well, with plenty of choice and at reasonable prices.

Breakfast was not quite up to the same standard though - although everything did come we had to ask very specifically for what we wanted, and weren't offered things in the way you might usually expect to be served - perhaps it was because we were the only ones in the house at that point.

The only other minor issue was that although there was a hairdryer in the room there was no plug point in a suitable place to enable you to dry your hair at the same time as looking in the mirror on the dressing table - a small point, but with the good quality of the fixtures, fittings and general ambience, it was disappointing that it had been overlooked.

There is a new management team and they seem to be extremely friendly and capable, so the place should go from strength to strength. Definitely worth a visit.

Great hotel, great staff and even better food. Probably the best meal I have ever eaten certainly the best meal in a hotel, and I have had a good few. The service is excellent and chef even rustled something up off the menu for our two fussy children!

“Excellent hotel”

A small luxury hotel with a family atmosphere and a genuine attitude that good friendly service is important.
I think we had the best room in the house for our anniversary weekend, with a lovely view across the fields to the church and the largest bed I have ever seen in a sleigh-style with a mattress 3 feet deep.
Food was excellent, maybe the best feature, from an extensive and well-sourced breakfast to a flawless evening menu, with perhaps the best lamb I have ever tasted.
We also ate at the pub in the village (same ownership as the hotel) one evening. Again it has an extensive menu with a lot of seafood options, all excellent quality and well-presented.
One drawback was the noise at 8am on Sunday morning, as our room was directly over the dining room and staff started early to move all the tables around for at least an hour in preparation for Sunday lunch.
The hotel's brochure lets it down badly as well, nice pictures, but too many silly mistakes.
Swimming pool was good, but very small changing rooms.
We would recommend this hotel highly to almost anyone except those with little mobility - there are lots of stairs!
