I worked with my travel agent to get a Deluxe hotel on the beach. My preference was the Ambassador or the Petasso or the Petasos. He told me that they were booked up and he booked me in the Princess of Mykonos. This hotel is nowhere near a substitute for the others. At this price range, it is a joke. For half the price you can get a hotel with a much better location. I have no clue how this is a # 10 ranking.
The stay started on the wrong foot. We specified on what ferry we were going to arrive from Santorini (where we stayed at the excellent Dana Apartments), but there was nobody to meet us. We got a cab which took us to the hotel. At the lobby, we were greeted by a big fake welcome by the porter, he then proceeded to pick up the smallest piece of our 3 piece luggage set (the one you can bring on the airplane as a carry on) leaving me to carry the other two pieces.
When we got to our room, our Sea Front room had a view of the Bar and a HUGE villa built right in front of the hotel. PLEASE BE WARNED, all the pictures of this place are BEFORE the villa was built, there is limited view of the sea. There is also more development going on right now, so who knows what it is going to be like for 2007.
When I turned on the air conditioning in our room, it proceeded to stream water on the floor. I went to lobby and asked for another room, and the pretty boy proceeded to throw up his hand and say what can he do, and made it sound like it is my fault I am of Greek background, and I know this shtick, and didn’t put up with it. After of 20 minutes of arguing, I got our new room. This is not how you want your stay to start at a hotel that is charging out these rates.
We continued to be under-whelmed by the service. For breakfast, they had only one person serving (really nice women). And I think she was the cook and cleaner also! When we went at 9:00, they would be out of cups and dishes, so you had to wait while she washed them. The breakfast itself was on the meager side, even for Greece. I am not a big eater, but this place charges and extra 30 EURO for breakfast, so I expect them to have enough china and the fare to be more than yogurt, cereal, and few hardboiled eggs. Also if they are running out of stock at 9:00, what is left for the late risers? They should also hire an extra person to help the poor girl out.
Agios Stefanos is a bad location. It is more of a bus stop than a town, with a small convenience store and 2 restaurants. It is on the north side so there is a howling wind. It is extremely unsafe to walk to the town. To get to the good beaches (Platis Yialos, Paradise) you have to take a bus into town, cross the labyrinth-like center and then take another bus to one of the beaches. This is a 3 hour exercise both ways.
The local beach is small and about 200 meters from the Hotel. Also it is next to a special port for the cruise ships to dock. In this respect, I do not consider the Princess to a “beach hotel” and it is not in town either. The worst of both worlds.
We complained to our travel agent about the hotel, and he said the island was booked, even though 2/3 of the umbrellas at Paradise Beach were empty.
On our third day, my girlfriend saw a postcard of a hotel with a stunning pool and great view of the Sea. It turned out Petasos Hotel at Platis Yialos. We jumped on the bus, went into the lobby and asked if they had any rooms. They had 3 available. We chose a room that was slightly run down, but a had a stunning view of the sea. And we saved 60% from the Princess! Not to mention the overall convenience of not having to spend 3 hours a day on a bus to get to a beach. We could have gotten a better deal if we walked around to a couple of the other hotels.
The Princess is a waste of time and money. It is not on the beach, and the beach it is near is not that good. It is not near the town for the night life, and it is isolated from the better beaches in the south. The staff is useless and lazy. On top of all this, it charges out on the high end. I wonder if my agent was getting a kick back.
