Just got back from Greece where I spend two nights in Mykonos Grand, then off to Santorini, and spend the last night back in Mykonos. Because Mykonos Grand was fully booked (for my price range), I decided to give Saint John a try. I settled for a Garden Room which has at the lowest rate (EUR 180), I didn't think I would mind since I will be spending less than 24 hours there before my flight to London and I would get to enjoy the rest of the hotel facilities anyway regardless of the room type. My overall experience, albeit a short one, was disappointing and it was interesting how I find myself making the same complaints as some earlier postings in Tripadvisors. I have always used Tripadvisor as a reference tool when searching for hotels in the past but this experience had compelled me to register myself to this website and to share my experience.
The hotel layout is less than ideal: the rooms sprawls over the side of a slope/hill so it is a long walk from the reception down to the pool area at the bottom of the hill. You can either walk along the "road", which is a steep slope down one side of the hotel, or down a series of steps / stairs meandering through the middle of the hotel. Neither paths were sheltered from the blazing sun above. We were told there were no lifts. Going up or down the slope was a challenge and some of the stone steps/stairs looks worn out and anyone could slip on them easily. The whole hotel was badly sign-posted, we had a hard time getting back to our rooms. Once we dumped our bags, we rushed down to the pool only to realise the allocated beach towels were in our wardrobe in the room. I know towel thefts cost the hotel money but I would expect a 5* hotel to price that in for their overall budgetting/pricing. When I am on holiday, I want to have unlimited supply of beach towels, available to me AT the pool when I need them. Because of the size of the hotel complex, they had small cars that run around the "roads" within the hotel, driven by hotel staff to service guests or to ferry guests around the complex on demand. In theory it's a good idea but in practice I don't want to have to watch traffic when I walk around the hotel afriad of being run over, and the engines add to both noise and air pollution with it exhausts - not what I am looking for in a beach resort. A soft of golf carts will be better, but probably not powerful to negotiate the steep roads.
There were no wi-fi in the rooms, and you need to buy time units to access internet through hotel computers. I have been so spoiled in recent years that I would now expect FREE internet to be basic human rights. Our rooms smells stuffy and damp when we arrive. Air-con smells like it has a dead-rat in it. The hot water ran out at night when we tried to take a second shower - we didnt bother to complain because we were leaving the next morning. No one came to turn the bed late afternoon, and the blanket was pretty poor (prefer soft fluffy duvets like that in the Grand). We tried to get hotel to order us a taxi at around 9pm but were told they had a hard time sourcing one and we were behind 7 other guests waiting for taxis. It's not their fault because taxis are notoriously scarce at those hours but when we had the same situation at the Mykonos Grand earlier in the week, they immediatgely organised a hotel van to take all of us to Mykonos Town Centre - at no cost. The best Saint John was able to offer was pointing us to the nearst bus station. None of the staff had a smile, they all had grumpy faces, didnt feel like they enjoy working there at all. The staff at the pool side bar was a little rude, didnt speak much English, and seem more interested in chatting among themselves than attending to the guest's needs. We ordered a Mediterranean club sandwich (EUR 15), which taste pretty nice but we were not allowed to have it by the poolside lounge chairs and had to eat it at the tables down by the bar. Breakfast was ok, though the omelette chef needs to be changed as they were poorly executed.
All in all, instead of feeling like a king pampered by luxury and attentive staff, I felt I was a child being talked down on all the time and told what I can or cannot do. To be balanced, there are some positives: the infinity pool is great, private beach is clean, and location is perfect as a ride to town is less than 10 mins, and the room and bathroom are very spacious. We didn't have issues of flooding in bathroom, perhaps something they fixed since then. The bedding (pillow case and bedsheets) are of high quality and threatcount making sleep very comfortable. But overall I feel Mykonos Grand is much classier, more luxurious and staff more professional than Saint John - and will offer better value.
