We stayed at Cerro Lodge for two nights in January. The rooms are in separate bungalows and are basic, but clean and comfortable. A ceiling fan keeps things (relatively) cool. The open-air bathroom has a bamboo fence for privacy and plants growing inside. It is a delight to shower there. There was an iguana on the bamboo when we arrived, but no other critters came in. There is a separate door to close at night to keep critters out. Bugs (mosquitos) were not a problem for us. We had a lovely view from our porch out to the sea in the distance with beautiful sunsets.
The main dining/lounge area has wi/fi if you need it. The nice pool area is a few steps below and all looks out over the jungle to the ocean in the distance. Bird feeders are filled with fruit to attract many colorful species. We stayed here as part of a pre-paid tour, so I don't know about the cost of food, except that soft drinks and beer/wine were extra. They keep notebooks for each room number at the kitchen window and you just write in whatever you take out of the refrig. and settle up at the end of your stay. The meals were buffet style, and everything was delicious.
Of course, the reason for our stay was birding, and we were not disappointed. The gardens are lovely and home to several hummingbird species, wrens and motmots. We were welcomed by a Ferruginous Pygmy Owl outside our room as we were unpacking the first evening. After dinner we found a Black and White Owl in the garden attracted to the insects that came to the lights. The next night there were two - one at the lights around the pool and the other at the same tree near the bungalows. Carara National Park is a short distance away and is a fabulous spot for many species of birds. Several species of monkeys were there as well. A boat ride on the nearby Tarcoles River is a great way to see the Mangrove Warbler as well as herons, kingfishers, trogons, etc.
Cerro Lodge is a great place to stay and I would definitely return. One couple that was staying there was staying for an entire month! Now I see why.
