My partner and I stayed at The Severn Trow on Thursday 12th of April 2012. My partner Steve had booked this overnight stay as a romantic treat for my 50th birthday. He had researched many excellent B&B s in this area and decided , after looking at the website and Trip Advisor reviews that The Severn Trow was definitely the place for a special surprise treat for me.
HOW VERY WRONG HE WAS.
We have stayed in some fabulous up market B&B s over the years and find they are much better value for money than large 4/5* hotels.
However this place was truly an exception to the rule. It left poor Steve feeling that he had let me down and it left me feeling totally underwhelmed and quite depressed.
Here are some of the reasons why you should think carefully about staying at this place. Spend your hard earned money somewhere else as £95 per night was quite frankly outrageous,
1. Do not be fooled by the view of the beautiful Iron Bridge Gorge on the home page of the web site. You will certainly not be able to see this from the window of what is supposed to be the romantic William and Mary room we stayed in. I have included a variety of photos from our window of the outside area. I was going to say garden, but quite frankly that would be an overstatement. The area was like some chavtastic back yard with a variety of junk in it. All it needed was an old fridge to finish off the effect. At no point could you see the gorge or any view at all.
2.The William and Mary was clean. However, my idea of romance is obviously far removed from that of the owners. The wardrobe was small with a chair infront of half of it. Inside were two unmatching coat hangers, the bigger of which was plastic and had split and broken. In the bottom corner of the wardrobe was a kettle and towards the front was an unfolded blanket for the bed.(photos included)There were no tea and coffee making facilities although we were told that we were welcome to get a tray from the communial kitchen area!
3.On reading the guest information pack we discovered the next very attractive and thoroughly romantic gesture-----THREE PAIRS OF BRIGHT YELLOW EARPLUGS------!!!!!!
The information advised that local wildlife could be noisy, along with other residents snoring habits and it advised the wearing of earplugs that could be taken home as a souvenier. These were supplied by the hosts as an alternative to sound proofing the rooms. i must say that at this point in the proceedings our despair at facing a night in this place turned to hysteria and we laughed, rather than cried. However-----upon returning from the theatre, which we booked last minute to placate ourselves, within 10 minutes of getting into bed IT started. In all our years we have never heard snoring like this. It was LOUD and totally relentless resulting in us getting very little sleep.
4.The guest lounge area was very tired with two old settes. This is where we had our breakfast which comprised of three choices of cereals, orange juice,a bowl of fruit including of a couple of oranges, apples and a brown banana. The cooked breakfast was acceptable.
I have to say that this review may come as a surprise to the owners. Steve was too embarrassed to complain as it was for a very special birthday surprise, and I felt awful as he had gone to so much effort in organising the suprise trip which involved organising secret time off work, childcare ,animals into catteries etc. Steve answered reasonably positively when asked if his stay was ok and I decided not to say anything when asked. I did however mention that I had had a terrible nights sleep due to snoring but this comment was not addressed.
Please also be aware that when you look on Trip Advisor photos of this place , they are all provided by the mamagement apart from the photo of the cake---I wonder why?
To sum up our review, I would say that if you are looking for a romantic retreat in a stunning location, do not choose this place. We cannot understand why it has so many good reviews as we dont have expectations higher than anyone else.
