This was a short tour - less than an hour - but the guide made the most of this time. He spoke about different kinds of bats, not only in this area, but throughout the world, This site tries to make its visitors have a more favorable opinion of bats. There were participation activities that simulated hearing like a bat with huge ears, and learning how many insects we would eat if we were bats and weighed what we do now. Really amazing.
The bats are kept in an enclosure that is kept dark, with just enough light to see them. A sound device takes their vocalizations, which are at a frequency higher than can be heard by the human ear, lowers the frequency to the human range, and plays over loudspeakers.
Really glad we stopped here.
The tour & feedings here run 3 times a day in the morning & afternoon; it's open late, but go earlier to catch a feeding which is fascinating. Our guide for the hour-long tour & feeding, Fabio, was fabulous. Anyone who's remotely interested in animals will love this. We'll return on our next visit.
Be sure to take advantage of this chance to learn about our friends the bats, who eat 1,000 bugs per hour, 3-4,000 per night each. A quirky place, very sincere. All three generations of our family enjoyed it.
New appreciation for bats, their diversity, and how important they are to our environment. The acutal bat display was fascinating. Definetely worth the time and great for all ages
This is the second time I've been to this tour and it is amazing. Richard is funny and he always gives interesting facts.
Learned a lot about bats from a guide who is really passionate about bat conservation. Worth checking out if you have time; have scheduled showings of the bats twice a day, but can arrange other times as well. Afterwards, you can head upstairs for a chocolate tour!
