Great place to learn about bats, lots of info and facts, Kelly the owner does an excellent job.
Go there during feeding time and afterwards enjoy a cup of coffee at Stella's bakery.
The staff is extremely knowledgable and passionate about bats. He specifically talked about bats in our area (Washington, DC) as well as the differences between them and the ones in Costa Rica and around the world. They have fiberglass bat ears that you can listen through to hear how sounds are amplified differently than through our ears. The live bats are all behind glass and he was able to talk about their habits and show us some specific behaviors as well as point out different physical features that have evolved through different species. He also took a break to talk about briefly about the pair of Blue tufted Mott Motts outside the window. A very affordable tour, probably the cheapest in monteverde.
Highly reccomend. lots of info. I learned so much. The setting is very nice too. Just down the road from the cheese factory.
Guides were passionate and informative about every aspect of bats. Colonies of bats were available to see.
The lady who runs the place is very passionate about bats so it was nice to hear facts about bats. But the exhibit with the live bats is pretty dismal. Our young kids (5, 6 and 9 yrs old) were bored during the educational spiel and lost interest in the bats exhibit after the first 5 mins. The bats exhibit is one big room with all bats flying... ...we went during feeding time. Plus, there aren't too many different types of bats. If there was no intro talk, I would have been done with the bat exhibit in 10 mins.
I didn't think too much about this place... ...except feel good that the lady genuinely cared for the bats. It's not a must-see at all compared to the Frog Pond or the Orchid Garden.
We are very sorry that Dukkar D did not enjoy his experience at the Bat Jungle. I note his only real criticism was about the live bat enclosure itself, where, in spite of his comment that there are not many kinds of bats, we have 8 different species. If he knows of a live bat exhibit anywhere with more species, I would like to know about it. For most visitors feeding time is the most exciting time to see the bats, and children usually love it. I point out that, according to the "lady who runs the place", as he called the guide, he and his young children arrived while a tour was underway, and he wanted to join that tour rather than wait for the next one (we offer special short tours for families with small kids.). I would hope Dukkar D will look at other Trip Advisor reviews to see just how much he disagrees with most other visitors.
This is a really great little stop along the way to either the town of St Elena or Monteverde Cloud Reserve and next to the best restaurant ever, Stella's. The tour is short but perfect. You walk away with great knowledge and a first hand experience that you probably can't get too many places in the world. The price is reasonable, it's easy to find, it's respectful to the bats considering they are in still in captivity and will hopefully help in the conservation of these amazing creatures!
