We recently spent a long weekend at l'Hotel des bains. We aren't very pleased with the outcome of our stay .
I will start by mentioning the pros. Great location by the beach and a 15mins walk from the train station. For those who like to play and gamble, the hotel is just across the Granville casino. There are many restaurants nearby. The room prices are budget friendly. Our seafront room #102 was €81 per night (not including breakfast).
For us, the one true blessing was the staff. Very friendly and helpful. Clarisse went out of her way to accomodate us. Our first night was virtually sleepless because of the street noise. We then discovered, to our greatest dismay, that the casino was hosting a "music festival" over the course of the weekend. Clarisse provides us with earplugs that allowed us to sleep a little better the following nights. She also recommended a boulangerie, which was a great spot for breakfast pastries.
As for the cons, many have previously mentioned the noise level, that is very problematic. The rooms' door closers don't work as they should. Rather than slowing down the door in its closing process, it bangs it very loudly into the door frame. Not fun at midnight and 6am. Additionally we could distinctively hear people chatting away in the hallways. Same goes for the toilet flushing. No noise isolation.
The street noise is a huge con. We had a seafront room which incidentally faced the casino carpark. We were treated to honking cars late at night and then to bin lorries at 5am.
The casino closes at 4am. You will hear the music emanating from it, as well as the very vocal guests coming out.
We had an unfortunate encounter on our first night with a trumpet player who thought it would be a brilliant idea to whip out his instrument and give an impromptu performance... at 4am... in the carpark. We opened our window and tried to sush him but the man was clearly inebriated and didn't want to negotiate. "Luckily" his concert only lasted half an hour.
Rooms have recently been renovated (not our bathroom though). Our room was quite nice but we felt the cleaning staff could have made more of an effort on the dusting part. Window ledge, nightstands and top of the cupboards were covered in dust.
Bathroom was small with a sliding door. The toilet was in one corner, shower in the other. No complaint here.
Our TV didn't work in the mornings (around 8 o'clock) and so we had no luck catching the weather forecast before heading out. The wifi in our room was either very slow or simply didn't work because the signal was too weak.
Although not important, the terrace was filthy; littered with bird poo and cigarette buds. Thankfully we didn't have access to it.
We won't be returning to the Hotel des Bains as we felt it didn't meet our basic requirements. If you're looking for a good night's sleep this isn't the place for you.
