Originally established in 1907 at an astounding 30,000 square miles, Etosha was then the world's largest national park. In Namibia's north, it's now smaller but still huge at 8,600 square miles and is one of the country's best known parks. The mostly dry lake bed of the Etosha Pan is the park's distinctive characteristic, serving as the sporadic main water source for a wide range of wildlife. Animals here include elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and the endangered black rhinoceros.
