What's your travel IQ?

Every good traveller knows their geography! Take the challenge to find out how well you know yours. First pick your challenge, then locate cities, historical landmarks and travel destinations on the map. Each level gets progressively harder – can you make it to level 12?

How to play:

We'll display names of various places. When each name is shown, the clock starts counting.

Click as close to where you think the location is on the map and you'll be awarded points based on:

  • * How close you were to the place
  • * How quickly you where able to click it

You'll advance to the next level if you reach the required number of points. Once you finished, you can save your score and see your overall rank among other savvy TripAdvisor travellers. If you're really good, you'll make our Top 20 scoreboard!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My Travel IQ has recently changed to a lower number. Why?

A: We have recently adjusted our Travel IQ calculation formula to be more precise. As a result, everyone will see a drop in their Travel IQ for games played prior to January 11, 2008. Please be assured that your overall position relative to other players will not change as a result of this update.

Q: What is the Traveller IQ Challenge?

A: The Traveller IQ Challenge is a map based game where you are presented with a series of places or events that you must locate on a map with a mouse click. Greater points are given for quickness and accuracy. The game becomes more difficult the deeper into the levels you go. A certain number of points are needed to continue on to successive rounds and which builds your Travel IQ.

Q: How do I make the map bigger so that you can actually see the countries you are supposed to identify?

A: The game size is restricted to the size of the map so this is as big as the creators of the challenge can make it.

Q: How many times am I allowed to play?

A: You can play as many times as you want. Each time you play, we will save your new score and recalculate your Travel IQ.

Q: How do you decide what the countries are called?

A: The Traveller IQ Challenge uses the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 3166 country list for all its games.

Q: I found a location that I know is misspelled/in the wrong location/is too big to have one point/is off the map, what should I do?

A: If you find any bugs or want to pass along a comment, please send them to TIQsupport@tripadvisor.com.

Q: Can I see how I rank in comparison to everyone else?

A: You sure can! A leader board of the top 10 is shown beneath the game. You can also select the scoreboard tab to see our Top 20 leader board and a display of how you rank among all players on TripAdvisor.

Q: I can see the game, but I can't play it – what's wrong?

A: Typically, this is caused by running an older version Flash. Flash version 8 or higher is needed to play. You can download it for free here. Before contacting support, also try with a different browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Q: Is there a place that I can discuss the game or other things with other people who play the Traveller IQ Challenge?

A: You can post game comments and questions in TripAdvisor Forums. This is a great place to talk with other members about the game.

Q: What is TravelPod?

A: TravelPod is the Web's original travel blog site, and creator of the Travel IQ Challenge! It's a free website that allows travellers to stay in touch while travelling, capture their travel memories in travel blogs that never expire and to chart their travels on maps.

Q: How is my Travel IQ calculated?

A: We calculate your unique Travel IQ relative to how well you scored versus all of the other TripAdvisor travellers who have played. A Travel IQ can be as low as 0 and as high as 200.

Q: I need a break mid–game. Is there anything I can do?

A: There is a pause button that appears in between each question on the same popup that indicates your score for the previous question.
