But bicycles symbolise the outdoors, and if there's one thing that unites Boulder residents and visitors alike, it's a love of the great outdoors. The fantastic climate, wide open spaces, mountains and parks draw outdoor enthusiasts to this beautiful town at the foothills of the Flatiron Mountains. Some of the best rock climbing in the world is available here; the skiing is world class and there are more than 200 hiking trails, many in Chautauqua Park. Like most college towns, the atmosphere here is hip, laid-back and arty. A lively cultural scene includes several prominent museums as well as the Fiske Planetarium. Stroll through the Pearl Street Mall, a great place to shop; try a vegetarian restaurant or a sidewalk café where you can watch the street performers.
