The Cairns region is the wildlife and nature capital of Australia - so its THE place to go if you want to see Australian wildlife. Of course, there's the Great Barrier Reef, an amazing natural phenonema - but there's more to the Cairns region than the reef. As a region, it has the highest diversity of any wildlife in Australia.
There are a few reasons for this abundance of wildife - firstly because of geography. Although Cairns is known for its rainforest, it also has arid regions close-by and dry eucalyptus forests on its edges and to the south. So it's a crossroads of sorts - the various species that inhabit these ecosystems can all be found in the Cairns region. Cairns also has fairly high mountains enabling unique species to evolve in these high regions. Another reason the Cairns region has an abundance of wildlife is because the land has not been completely overtaken by farming and housing - there are still huge areas of wild land.
So, if you want to see wildlife in Australia, you must go to Cairns!
