Southampton is a fairly safe place to visit.  With this being said, there are certain precautions that travelers should take in order to insure a smooth trip to Bermuda.

Bermuda’s crime rate is relatively low, but like in most tourist destinations, petty crime does occur.  To avoid getting hit by this, follow a few basic rules.  Don’t carry around large amounts of money, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry or looking flashy.  Drawing un-needed attention to one’s self is never a good idea.  Try blending into the crowd instead of sticking out.  Pickpockets have been known to operate on the island, and are usually found in crowded tourist areas.  Women should keep a close eye on purses, and men should carry wallets in front pockets instead of rear.

Avoid traveling alone at night.  This is a general recommendation for any unfamiliar area, but should be followed in Southampton as well.  Also, avoid wandering alone into non-tourist areas.

In case of medical emergency, the best local place to visit is the King Edward VII Memorial hospital.  For more information, visit the Hospital Website.

The Bermuda police can be very helpful in certain situations involving violent crime and theft.  For more information, visit the Bermuda Police Website.
