The main airport in Puerto Rico, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, is located near San Juan, the island capital. There are several others throughout the island, but these are usually converted U.S. military bases now used mainly for travel within the Caribbean. The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is served by many major airlines that fly to other Caribbean destinations (such as Antigua, Santiago or Santo Domingo) and major cities in the United States, including New York, Orlando, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Air Canada also offers flights to Montreal and Toronto, while Iberia Airlines provides service from Madrid for European tourists. A few Central and South American cities, notably Caracas and Panama City, can be directly reached from Puerto Rico as well.

Visitors who reach Puerto Rico by ship will dock at the San Juan Port. Cruise lines are available from most large islands in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic, or from some continental cities in Florida, Mexico or Venezuela.

El Yunque National Forest is located about 25mi (40km) southeast of San Juan. Rent a car at the airport and drive to El Yunque by taking Highway 26 east to Carolina. After about 7mi (11km), merge onto PR Road #3 and continue until you see the sign for Palmer-El Yunque. At this point, turn onto PR Road #191 and follow it until you come to the visitor’s center for the forest on your right.
