For adventurous travelers, a good day trip is to partake on one of the demanding hikes but the Centre and Silver hills. Tourists can arrange tours with the local Forest Rangers who will provide guidance and knowledge of the land. The hikes tend to start bright and early in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day. However, travelers should be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring a flask of water filled with ice or a plastic bottle of water for the hike.
These hikes a very pleasing way to see the natural landscape of Montserrat. Travelers can hike through Cassava Ghaut, or Katy Hill, as well as the Thatch valley in the Silver Hills. To beat the hottest part of the day, hikers can have a picnic overlooking a bluff to the Caribbean sea, and forget their worries or stresses for the moment. Then, travelers can reboot and continue to climb through bush, to see the enormous population of wild birds on this island, including the national bird the Montserrat Oriole.
Another good day trip is a visit to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, (MVO), which provides a historical background to the volcano’s activity. Travelers can tour the observatory, view the seismographs that show the scientists and technicians the volcanic activity of the area, and see posters and pictures of the eruption. It is important to note however, that travelers can not actually see the volcano from this observation site.
