Boatswain's Beach BOATSWAIN'S BEACH (AKA THE TURTLE FARM ) Visitors to Grand Cayman may be excused for wondering whether there are in fact two turtle farms on the island, until they understand that the new cultural attraction Boatswain's Beach is the Turtle Farm’s new home. Apart from turtles, Boatswain's Beach offers a total all-day attraction equally attractive to adults, teens and toddlers. It is also the place, especially on weekends, that visitors can enjoy meeting Caymanians and residents. Cayman Street with its old Caymanian style façade, offers local artisans demonstrating the art of thatchmaking, and other Caymanian pastimes. There is also traditional Caymanian cooking on a caboose (fireplace) and the use of local flora and fauna gives the place an authentic and nostalgic air. The snorkel lagoon, a 1.3 million gallon water park, is home to thousands of brightly coloured fish. Close by is the Predator Tank, which is home to an array of sharks, eels, groupers, and other fish. Visitors who don’t want to get wet can watch the shark feeding from Schooner's Bar and Grill or the deck over looking the tank. For those wanting a fresh water dip, Breakers Lagoon offers Cayman's only waterfalls, fun in the sun for kids and adults. Land based activities include the Turtle Breeding Pond, a Nature Trail--complete with butterfly gardens-- and a chance to see the local silver thatch tree, banana orchid and other native fauna. A small cave system called the “Blue Hole” is found at the end of this winding West Bay Woodlands. There is also the free flight Aviary with a selection of birds found throughout the Caribbean and is also home to the Cayman Parrot. These colorful and social birds are found no where else in the Carribbean.  Outside you will find the Shoreline Nursery, housing an assortment of juvenile fish and some of the island's famed Blue Iguanas. The new education centre teaches kids and others about the turtle-hatching programme, and life around the park. Boatswain's Beach is a must-see for visiting Cayman with kids, and an educational and fun experience for everyone. Don’t forget to stop at the Turtle themed gift shop for great gifts and postcards, all reasonably priced. When the weather gets hot, an ice-cream cone from the café does just the trick. This attraction is in West Bay, just 10 ten miles from the cruise ship landing, and is perfect for cruise visitors wanting to do something unique on their day in port. Staff at Boatswain's Beach, most of them Caymanian, are very hospitable and anxious to share their culture and the warmth of traditional Caymanian hospitality with their guests.
