Absolutely gorgeous and serene beach ! Originally we were headed to Coki beach but taxi driver said it was closed. Another couple we shared taxi with investigated St. Thomas' beaches and said they were headed to Sapphire Beach, so we tagged along. It was about a 15 minute drive from our ship in port via public taxi, which cost us $10.00 pp. Well worth it, the taxi driver spoke about the island with tips and inside information the whole ride, pointing out everything we passed and what it was. The ride itself was fantastic in an open air taxi. I highly suggest taking off on your own, or with others, when exploring the island, as the ship can be expensive for excursions. We arrived at Sapphire Beach which to our amazement is a huge resort. We walked thru a small open air lobby and out onto the beach. It is absolute heaven. White sand, clear blue water, which was very warm, you could jump right in and snorkel around or just swim and play. Little colorful fish were swimming up to us, and although a woman was afraid, the fish do not bother you at all. There is a snorkle rental stand, and the young man who runs it was so very nice and informative. He told us if we swam out to a certain point in the water we would see large turtles. I didn't go out, but my husband did and he saw much more than turtles, colorful fish, coral. It was difficult to leave this gorgeous beach but we did spend our whole day there, swimming, drinking refreshments, which the snorkel place sells, along with snacks like chips and such. I would suggest a large towel to lie on as they do not supply chairs or lounges for free. And be sure to bring your camera ! So so beautiful. People were extremely friendly ! Snorkel equipment rental was very reasonable. I would also suggest not bringing anything with you that could be stolen as there are many people on this beach due to the resort - although we had no problems it's just meant as a heads up - We are leaving soon for another cruise and our intention is to go straight back to Sapphire Beach as soon as we arrive in St. Thomas. A must see beach ! Coki beach, from what I have read, is also another very popular beach, but because of a bad rain storm, we were told there was "run off" from the island going into the water at Coki Beach and they would not let anyone swim there, or go there for that matter. There is no fear of water pollution at Sapphire Beach since it is more towards the middle of the island/.
If your going, Enjoy !!
