A trip to the neighboring island of St. John makes an excellent day-long excursion from St. Thomas's East End. The Red Hook Ferry Terminal is within walking distance of East End, or a very short taxi ride for those who do not wish to walk. From the Ferry terminal, St. John is just minutes away, and tickets are just $3 for adults and $1 for children younger than 11. Ferries arrive and depart from St. John several times a day. See your hotel or check at the Red Hook terminal for schedules.
Once on St. John visitors can easily hop into a taxi at the terminal to take them into town. The taxis can also take you on a tour of the island. A half-day tour, about 4 hours, cost $60 and a full-day tour, about 7 hours, costs $75. Those who may not want to go on a tour can also go to St. John's famous Trunk Beach by taxi from the ferry terminal. If you choose to do this it is a smart idea to also arrange with the taxi driver a time to be picked up.
