Colima Volcano also known as Volcan de Colima or Volcan de Fuego de Colima is one of the most active volcanoes in North America and was selected by the UN Decade Volcano Program, where 10 of the World's most dangerous and active volcanoes would be studied for 10 years. During the rainy season you do need to constantly check on the changing weather conditions but the volcanoes can be crystal clear after overnight thunderstorms. Also, low cloud and fog can hang around Colima, Comala, and the road leading up the mountain to San Antonio disappointing many travellers when in fact above that cloud and fog the volcano is clear! Consider going to the antennas on adjacent Nevado de Colima (extinct) at 4,000 meters which provides spectacular views of the summit crater of Colima Volcano - currently there is a lava dome growing within the crater. Mountain Lions inhabit the volcanoes along with Bobcats, and the mountains are also a very highly rated site for birdwatching. It is well worth the 2 hour trip from Manzanillo to the base of the mountains - expect to spend a full day on the mountains themselves.
