Leading up to Christmas in Oaxaca are many events and processions. Dec 23 is la Noche de Rabanos, Night of the Radishes, where large and fantastic sculptures out of large radishes and other natural materials are created by area groups and displayed. Events actually start early in the day. In 2007 there was a children's carving event where children created their own nativity and other scenes. These were later displayed along with the many other creations. All around the Zocalo these creations are displayed, and as the evening progresses the lines to enter and see them grow. However, many people look from outside of the display walkways to avoid the lines. Best is to arrive early when the lines are not as long. In the evening the winners of the competitions are announced and there is a fireworks display next to the Cathedral. During the preChristmas to New Years period, many people come to Oaxaca from throughout Mexico as well as the rest of the world, so early travel reservations are recommended.
