San Miguel de Allende does not have a huge problem with crime, but you need to use common sense just like you would anywhere else. Keep your valuables out of sight -- this includes your cash. If you're paying for something in cash, don't pull out a wad of money, sift through it, and pull out the bill(s) you need. Instead, keep only smaller bills in the primary compartment of your wallet and tuck larger bills away where they are not visible. Also, whether you're walking down the street or sitting down to dinner, have your valubles where you can see them. Just because they are next to you doesn't mean they are safe! Remember to be alert, and you will be fine.
If you are the victim of a crime, be sure to tell the police. There's probably not much they can do to get your purse back, but they will do what they can. Tourism is a primary income for most people in San Miguel, so they want to leave you with a favorable impression of their city.
