The town of Jasper lies within Jasper National Park , near the border between Alberta and British Columbia, and it takes a few hours of driving to get to the nearest large cities (360 km/220 mi to Edmonton, 404 km/256 miles to Calgary, and 860 km/520 mi to Vancouver). The town sits at the junction of Highways 16 and 93, and was established in 1911 when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway line was built to Jasper and through Yellowhead Pass. Today, Jasper is on the main CN railway line.
Today, the national VIA Rail service from Prince Rupert, B.C. (on the Pacific coast) to Jasper is available three times a week aboard the Skeena. The Canadian, which travels between Vancouver and Toronto, passes through Jasper as well three days per week. A more scenic way to get to Jasper by train is with Rocky Mountaineer Vacations , which operates the Yellowhead Route from Vancouver to Jasper, and the Fraser Discovery Route between Whistler and Jasper. The first features views of majestic canyons and waterfalls, while the latter winds through the peaks and plateaus of western Canada.
