The annual Just For Laughs festival is a large event that happens over a few weeks in July each year. There are street performances (some central streets are closed off to traffic), theatre shows and even a parade. There's all sorts of other information on the site as well.

Also, the Montreal International Fireworks Competition is a good event to see if you are in the city on a Saturday during the summer. Every Saturday evening a country competes with their best fireworks show. Tickets to see the fireworks at close range and in seats is available to buy, but good, free vantage points can be found all around the city as well as around the Harbour area.
