Although the tide mill is no longer operating, it is interesting to see and surprising to discover that the use of tidal power is quite an old invention. There is a toll bridge across the river Test at this point (free to pedestrians) leading on to Eling village which has a church dating from Saxon times and a pub. There is a pleasant short walk around the reeded riverside area using a footbridge to recross the river higher up; the wildlife includes a pair of swans and their offspring.
