There are numerous bus services that operate inside and out of the city to form an integrated public transport system. Try A2B, First, Solent Blue Line, Bluestar, Solent Shuttle, The New Forest Tour, Do The Docks, Uni-link, Stagecoach, Tellings Golden Miller, or Wilts and Dorset lines. Also the 3 Red Rocket services operate in the surrounding Eastleigh area.
The City Link free shuttle (operated by Uni-link) operates every ten minutes during peak hours and every half hour during the evening. It links the Central Station (trains), West Quay (shopping) and Town Quay (ferries to the Isle of Wight). Additionally, the free City Loop run by A2B service hits north and east of downtown every twenty minutes, six days a week.
Taxis troll the streets, making for easy pub-hopping-minus-designated-driver.
However, the city centre itself is not large and taking a bus is not always necessary. To get to the university, you can take the U1A bus from the Central Station or Civic Centre (every 15mins Mon-Fri daytimes), or the U2B bus from the Civic Centre.
