Ambleside is a very safe town, and you should have no concerns about your safety when you visit. The town has a very tightly knit community, and there is hardly any crime in the area. There is such little crime, in fact, that the police station does not stay open all day long. During the late night hours, the police force goes to sleep. If you ever do have a problem during these hours, you can call and leave a message, or there is an emergency line. During the day when the police force is working, you can call up the regular number and get through to the station. Even though this is a very safe town, you should still exercise caution as a traveler. Because this is a popular town, many tourists come through, so you should keep your eyes open. You should never leave your wallet out on a table, and never leave any valuables behind in your room. Don't leave a camera slung around your neck, and always have your passport on you no matter what.
