There are a few museums and other attractions in Ambleside that are fun and worth checking out. Two popular museums in the area are the Wordsworth Trust/Dove Cottage Museum and the Lakes Discovery Museum/Armitt Library. These are the two most frequently visited museums in the area, and they offer a rich history about the Lake District. The fees to get in to these museums is not too expensive, and you can usually get a discount with children and senior citizens. There are some other museums as well, including Rydal Mount and Gardens and Hawkshead Grammar School. These are all fun places to take a family if you want to learn about some history, or just see models of how life in Ambleside used to be. There are other attractions in the area as well, including Windermere Lake Cruises, and other boating activities. There are many art galleries in the area, where you can't publicly go and enjoy the art, but you can go in to buy works of art. This way, you can get a taste for the local art scene, even if you are just browsing.
