Held each year during the month of August, the most popular and widely attended event in Grasmere is its Grasmere Sports Day.  This nearly 150-year old event is usually held on the Sunday prior to August's bank holiday, near the end of the month, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators from near and far.  The festival is considered to be Grasmere's main event of the summer and is always widely anticipated.

Among the events held on Sports Day are the traditional English sports of wrestling, hound trailing and fells running.  For more information call the Grasmere Information Center at  015394 35245.

Another of Grasmere's traditional events, though much more locally and family oriented, is the Rushbearing Ceremony held in the fall of each year at the town's St. Oswald's church.  The tradition dates back to the time before churches had insulated floors and central heating; the rushes were spread on the floor to help ward off the cold. If you are interested in seeing this ceremony call the number above for more information.
