A cluster of mainly 17th and 18th century building beneath the beautiful 11th Century church of St Michael and All Angels, Hawkshead is frequently described as the quaintest, prettiest village in the Lake District. A maze of squares, cobbled lanes and archways interlace the charming mish-mash of cottages and shops; every one different in style and detail which is a delight for artist, photographer and visitor. The slate construction of many of the buildings is softened by the white and cream painted walls, with the splash of pink, yellow and green adding to the visual appeal.
