This is a beautiful early 20th C church designed by the well known Liverpool architect J Francis Doyle. It has many features of interest including a superb Willis II organ. This may be heard at the choral Sunday services at 10.30am and 6.30pm. The church has a robed choir and one claim to fame was that Sir Paul McCartney was once a choir boy at St Barnabas. There are a number of interesting 20th C stained glass windows including the unique and very moving great East Window installed as a memorial to those members of the parish who lost their lives in WW1. Another interesting feature are the many stone carvings in the church. These were carved under the direction of Joseph Phillips, principal contemporary (1913) stone carver at Liverpool Cathedral. Of particular interest are the carved stone angels and cherubs.
The reredos is a superb example of wood carving craftsmanship and features the meeting of Jesus on the road to Emmaus. This is flanked by carvings of St Barnabas and St Mary, mother of Mark .
St Barnabas is open on Tuesdays & Thursday mornings from 10.00 am to 12 noon and Sundays for the 3 main services, 8.30am, 10.30am and 6.30pm. You will receive a warm welcome.
